In the wake of a defeat in what Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri defined a “decisive match” at Sassuolo, the bianconeri continue to sit in the bottom half of Serie A’s table. This thought piece considers the conditions that have brought them to this stage and a possible way forward
Group Dynamics and Integration
Too Much Change?
“Juventus is missing Vidal, Pirlo and Tevez” is frankly becoming an overplayed refrain. The fact is that Juventus is yet to score off of a free kick, despite getting plenty of chances within striking range. Pirlo’s absence is felt when Juventus has to control game flow, “administer” the match. It is no wonder that Juve has lost so many games that it should have dictated the pace. While Juventus is well assorted with strikers of great pedigree upfront, these lack Tevez’s ability to score decisive goals. Vidal had too a poor season last year to be considered in this analysis.
Integration of New Players
Over the summer Juventus added a plethora of talent: from Alex Sandro to Mandukic, from Dybala to Zaza and Lemina. The average age dropped considerably ushering in much needed rejuvenation of the roster. With so much change, however, Juventus is risking the experience necessary to get through key matches. Nurturing promising youngsters to stardom (see what Allegri did last year with Morata), is possible if done incrementally. To do so with 3-4 starters is perhaps too daunting a task for Allegri and for Juventus veterans.
