Massimo Cellino & Leeds United: A closer look

Earlier this week, the English Football League banned former Cagliari owner, Massimo Cellino, from being an Owner or Director of any football club until June 2016.

The ban came after Cellino was found guilty by a Court in Sardinia, of an offence under Italian tax legislation relating to the non-payment of VAT on the importation of a Land Rover vehicle. This resulted in a fine of €40,000 and the confiscation of the vehicle in question.

Having considered detailed legal advice and the Court’s reasoned judgment, the Football League determined that the decision of the Italian Court constituted a disqualifying condition under the Owners’ and Directors’ test. If he so wishes, Cellino has until 28 October to appeal against the decision.

Cellino has stated that he intends to contest the ban, insisting that it would not affect him or his actions at Elland Road. He said: “I am running the club, and I will always be running this club.”

Our columnist, John Fiorentini, took a closer look at Leeds United and their problems earlier this week, the majority of which started long before Cellino’s involvement with the club. However, the Sardinian’s constant changing, and indeed actual choice, of managers has exacerbated the existing problems, with many fans calling for him to sell his stake in the club.
