Why Icardi Isn’t Worth Fifty Million Euros Yet

Today, Mauro Icardi scored the winning goal in his side’s narrow 1-0 victory over Delio Rossi’s struggling Bologna. Despite his goal, he’s still got ways to go.

Earlier in the summer it was reported that a wide variety of teams were after Inter’s Mauro Icardi. When the nerazzurri set a 50 million euro price tag on their man, Europe’s elite sides decided to look elsewhere. Given the hefty valuation, you can’t really blame them. The Argentine has underwhelmed in his first outings this season and has notched three goals in nine games. On his day, however, the 22-year-old is one of the best strikers in Italy. In Mancini’s new-look Inter, where physique is valued more than technique, Icardi’s been reduced to being a mere poacher. The lack of technical players in the side is something that has hindered his growth this season. After the Bologna game, the striker told reporters,:

“I score when I get service. In ten games, I received four quality scoring chances and scored from three of them. That’s a good average if you ask me.”

Let’s forget the fact that he’s just thrown his teammates under the bus for an instant and consider what he just said. The above statement is wholly untrue as after watching Inter closely you realize quickly that he’s had more than four chances to score. While the striker is usually lethal in front of goal, he hasn’t been this season. That doesn’t mean that he won’t return to being his usual clinical self shortly but with this Inter, it seems that it will take time.

Outside of his poor finishing this season, he has looked lacklustre when in possession. Even if carrying the ball was never his strength, the former Sampdoria man has been tuning out of games all too often and giving away possession cheaply. These are not qualities that you would typically associate with the Inter striker. Once he regains his motivation, I’m confident that we will see the Icardi of old. I just don’t see Mancini being able to help him rekindle this fire under him therefore it must come from within.

With a crucial run of games coming up, Inter will need to see the Icardi they know and love. It’s now time for him to pick up his socks and go to work. As of right now, the striker is not worth the price-tag that Inter have set for him. That’s not to say that he will never reach those heights. In fact, if Icardi’s progression continues in the same way as it has in the past few years, he will likely exceed the nerazzurri’s expectations. Until then, however, you would be foolish to spend fifty million euros to bring the Inter man to your team.
