During the reunion that was held today for the approval of Juventus’ latest balance sheet, President Andrea Agnelli has spent a few words about the current situation of Italian football.
Italian Football is still struggling to evolve, and this, according to Agnelli, is to be blamed primarily on stadiums –among which Juventus Stadium is one of the few positive exceptions. “If we want to improve as a whole movement, we should change the stadiums, because that is where the show is”, said Agnelli. “Right now, except for Udinese and Sassuolo’s stadiums and San Siro –which will be renewed for the 2016 UEFA Champions League final- all other teams have obsolete, unsafe stadiums. If the League board is able to find money for implementing goal line technology (€400.000), I can’t see why they can’t do the same for CCTV and other security appliances. Allegri has also stressed the importance of reforming the league, starting from the reduction of the number of teams and provisions for minor leagues. “But only if economic contributions are directed towmards significant projects and not towards helping inefficient clubs”.
But most importantly, it’s the whole idea of football that needs to change in Italy: “Otherwise our only hope of attracting champions is to exploit particular situations (Tevez) or to find them when they’re young”.
