PREVIEW: Opposites Attract? Inter Host Roma In Scudetto Clash

It’s a tale of two opposites at the San Siro tomorrow. Italy’s best defence (Inter) lines up against Italy’s best attack (Roma) with both sides eager to stifle their opponent.

It’s still early in the 2015/16 season, but Inter v Roma promises to shed some light on which side may be lifting the title come May 2016.

Juventus’ slow start to the year was reinforced with defeat to Sassuolo this week. As a consequence, the top of the Serie A table makes for very unfamiliar viewing.

The title race is poised to be an exciting one

BEST ATTACK: ROMA – Goals: 25 (2.5 per match)

Form: WWWWW

You have to go back seven months, to the 19th of March, to find the the most recent occasion when Roma failed to score a goal.

Gervinho, Pjanic & Mohamed Salah have scored 5 goals each so far this season showing Roma’s ability to not rely on a lone source for goals.

Interestingly, big summer signing Edin Dzeko is yet to find his scoring boots, only netting once.

With Roma so freely scoring despite their main goal threat yet to chip in, fear will be instilled into the Inter side from the get go.

BEST DEFENCE: INTER – Goals conceded: 7 (0.7 per game)

Form: LDDDW

Inter quite literally are polar opposites of Roma this year, averaging 1.0 goals per game, they have seriously struggled to find the net.

A strange statistic considering that Icardi, last seasons top scorer is amongst their ranks, with the likes of Jovetic and Perisic added too.

On the contrary, Inter are a tough side to score against. They have only allowed 7 goals in 10 matches this year, with 4 of those coming against Fiorentina.

In total, Inter have accumulated 6 clean sheets this season (this compared to Roma’s 1).

Despite their far from leaky defence, and victory vs Bologna this week, Inter come into this match in poor form.

Inter have only own one of their last five matches despite maintaining a 100% record in their opening five matches.

KEY PLAYERS:

Douglas Maicon

“Inter is my past, I now love Roma”

Maicon, surged back into the Roma line up this week, contributing a goal and assist in what was a fantastic performance.

He will be looking to build on that performance with another similar against his former club.

Adem Ljajic

“Roma is a special team, Inter is not far behind. We won’t settle for 3rd place, we want to beat Roma”

Ljajic made the summer switch from Roma to Inter and will be key to impress both Rudi Garcia and Roberto Mancini.

He has failed to crack Mancini’s starting XI despite some good performances for the Serbian NT, but may be deployed due to extra incentives against his parent club.

Edin Dzeko

“Roberto Mancini wanted to sign me.”

Dzeko has been playing well for Roma. But he hasn’t been scoring. His goal contribution could be vital to the outcome of this match.

The Bosnian was heavily linked with a move to Inter, before ending up at Roma.

WRITER PREDICTION:

Roma to edge a thriller. Dzeko to score.

Inter 2-3 Roma.
