Udinese defeated Napoli 3-1 at home on Sunday afternoon in an eventful game, and after the match, Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri spoke to Sky Sport about his team’s performance and the events that took place within the match.
Sarri on the club’s performance and some difficulties:
“The loss comes from a great performance by Udinese, and us a below par match. It’s clear that it could have gone differently based on some events, but there’s a risk of losing if you can’t push yourself to certain levels. Unfortunately, we struggled to work after the international break and to play at this time, and it’s possible that managing these road trips has become problematic. The expenditure of energy could be different; I think of Jorginho with his first call up (to the national team) that he may be at a lower physical and mental state. We want to become a great team, so there’s the need to improve on managing the small things. To play at 12:30 is unnatural, there are those that adapt, but we find it difficult.”
Sarri after he was asked how it feels to always play after Juventus and how his club should react to the loss:
“Since we have been in second place we have played six times after Juventus and not just because of the other competitions. There could be an adjustment for this; it’s not normal and it seemed to be an exaggeration. If this gives us pressure, however, it means that we are not yet a team that can handle the pressure. We have to work on what is up to us; unfortunately these decisions do not depend on us. We have the absolute will to play a strong team, a very strong team. This match must give us anger and motivation. We have had a tremendous season, but we have to finish strong. There is a hint of disappointment, but we must transform starting Tuesday with determination. This is the reaction the team should have. We want to compete with anyone.”
Sarri on his thoughts to Higuain’s reaction after the striker got a red card:
“Juve is holding an impressive run; I think it’s unlikely for them to have a downturn in the end. Gonzalo is attached to this jersey; he felt victim of an injustice and he reacted with anger. I believe that in the Italian league there has been much worse.”
