In the afternoon that followed Buffon’s exclusion from the preliminary list from the Ballon d’Or candidates, the Italy captain responded in a typical “Buffon fashion”.
In an open letter to the fans on his official Facebook page, he opened with, “a typical day”.
“This morning, a typical day like any other, I found myself overwhelmed on the phone with so much support and solidarity, not because of my lack of nomination among the 50 or 60 eligible candidates for the Ballon D’Or!! Honestly I was not aware that such a list was made, it caught me by surprise the amount of people close to me that have been staying close albeit in an exaggerated fashion!!
By now you may have guessed, for years I’m an incurable optimist and hardly get feelings of resentment, frustration, but particularly resignation. Therefore you know what I take home from this incident? The spontaneous support from all of you and the media this morning, commenting on my exclusion.
Thanks, it really warmed my heart and it was an act of great respect that I did not deserve, that almost embarrassed me, but that I appreciated for a thousand and one reasons !! It demonstrates proof that I do not and have never saints in paradise, I took for what I gave, I got where I could, on the basis of a law that is often misleading the merit!
Then there would be many other reasons, but overall I like to think that you love me as an Italian among Italians, as well as an Italian in the world, and this makes me feel even more the beauty of this wonderful adventure that is life !!
Of course, speaking in all sincerity, at least fifth among the best goalkeepers of last season I thought I would be… Obviously, it must have been all in my head ;))) A heartfelt thank you to all, really, if I have taken the time to write in my own words this little sequence of emotions its just because you have made me feel respected and respect I do not take for granted.
