Darmian: “I’m Happy to Have Scored my First Goal.”

Manchester United fullback Matteo Darmian spoke to the media after his first ever goal for the national team in his side’s win over Azerbaijan.

Darmian notched his first goal for the national team today after he intercepted a rather errant pass expertly and slotted home past the Azerbaijani keeper from outside the box. After the game he told the Rai reporters,:

“The important thing was to qualify. We knew it would be a hard game and we approached this game in the best way possible. It’s nice to score my first ever goal for the national team. It’s a huge emotion and you could have seen that in my celebration with my teammates.”

There’s been a lot of injuries in this international break for your team.

“Yes, but we were completely focused on the game to the point where we didn’t think of the injured players. We look ahead. We are very pleased with our qualification but we are obviously thinking about our injured teammates.”

Is the objective to finish first in the group?

“When we go onto the field, we always play to win and we will do this against Norway on Tuesday.”

What did Conte tell the team in the locker room?

“Nothing in particular. He was happy that we qualified.”

What’s it like to go from being coached by Ventura to Van Gaal?

“With Ventura I spent four important years, he helped me immensely to grow as a player especially since I was coming off a hard year with Palermo. He always gave me confidence and our relationship got better with each passing year. I have to thank him, he’s a top manager. Even Van Gaal has a strong personality. Both managers give a lot of attention to detail and expect the best from every player.”

What’s the step up in quality like from Torino to Manchester United?

“Playing every game at the highest level helps you grow in every respect.”
