PREVIEW: Inter Require Response vs Sampdoria

Mancini faces his former side while attempting to steer Inter back to winning ways.

An emotional affair this Sunday in Serie A puts Roberto Mancini’s Inter Milan up against Walter Zenga’s Sampdoria.

With Mancini spending the majority of his playing career at Sampdoria and Zenga the majority of his at Inter, it will be a great occasion for the pair – and one they would love to seize victory in.

Manager’s Quotes

Roberto Mancini:

“Sampdoria is always a special game for me. I had some great times there”

“We’ve taken 15 points from six games. I don’t think we’re doing that badly…”

Walter Zenga:

“It would be disrespectful towards Inter and my fans if I pretended this was the same as any other game for me”

“It will be nice to see Mancini, we’re good friends.  He made history with Sampdoria.”

“Roberto (Mancini) likes to keep his cards close to his chest, so I will too”

Tainted

Inter Milan’s perfect start to the 2015/16 came to a crashing end last week in the hands of Fiorentina.

Roberto Mancini’s side begun the match having won all five of their opening fixtures – boasting the only 100% record in Italy.

Dubbed as the biggest test for both sides so far this season, Fiorentina prevailed with ease.

The Florence based club dismantled Inter by scoring three goals in the first 23 minutes – cruising to a 4-1 victory.

Despite their recent loss, Inter are still comfortably positioned at the top of the league (tied on points with Fiorentina) – meeting/exceeding overall expectations this season thus far.

Inter’s next test will be one of character.

Travelling to Sampdoria after their first taste of defeat – the manner of reaction will reveal a lot about Inter’s pedigree going forward this season.

Inconsistent.

Sampdoria sit 9th currently, with nine points from 10 games – a solid start.

Inconsistency is probably the best word to describe Sampdoria this season, enduring a mixture of emotions so far.

A brilliant 2-1 victory against Roma is the highlight, with a hard fought point against Napoli (after trailing 2-0) not far behind.

However, a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Atalanta last week came as a reality check.

What is worth noting; Sampdoria’s efficiency in-front of goal.

Only Roma have scored more goals than Zenga’s side this year.

Sampdoria star Eder currently leads the league as top goalscorer – with 6 in as many matches. This may prove pivotal in the result.

Writer’s prediction:

Inter’s squad is more than capable of taking all three points here.

However, Mancini is still experimenting with tactics, and apparently undecided on his preferred XI.

Sampdoria generally partake in open matches. Their fans have seen the most goals in the league this season, with a combined total of 21 goals in their six games so far (scored + conceded combined).

Based on that analysis, I excpet both teams to score with Inter edging the result.

Sampdoria 1-2 Inter Milan
