Was there an international break this weekend? I must say I didn’t notice, that’s because while the rest of the world was watching the tedium that is international football my eyes were affixed on something far more important… yes that’s right the one the only Serie B.
Okay I’ll admit that may be over hyping it a bit but the league still remains as unpredictable as a Fredy Guarin shot on goal and that is more than can be said for most of the International matches that took place this weekend.
We get the ball rolling this week with the very first game of match day seven where Crotone made the trip to Vicenza. The Rossoblu knew anything other than a defeat would put them top of the league, temporarily at least before Cagliari played on Sunday.
And that they duly did, although only just, as they managed to hold firm and claim a point in a scoreless affair at the Stadio Menti. Throughout the 90 minutes it was Vicenza who had the lion’s share of better chances on goal, with the most standout one being Giacomelli’s penalty in the first half that he blazed a few foot over the crossbar.
While Vicenza did look more likely to score it is not to say that the Rossoblu did not have chances and could just have easily won themselves if Martella’s header was only a few inches lower, instead it cannoned back off the bar.
Nil-nil it finished in the end, a slightly disappointing result for the Lane as for Crotone their dream start to the season continues.
Later that Saturday night we were treated to the Derby Del Riso between Pro Vercelli and Novara. Now neither of these two clubs would be considered at the forefront of the Italian game but that did not prevent their fans from producing a cracking atmosphere at the Stadio Silvio Piola.
Only 26km separates these two cities and from the evidence on the pitch there is not much there to separate them either. However, in the end it was Novara who came out on top by the slightest of margins, Viola with the goal 23 minutes into the first half.
In fairness to Viola it was a goal of high enough quality to be deserving of winning any derby, as he inch perfectly curled a free kick from just outside the box and to the right of centre into the top right corner past a fully stretched Pigliacelli.
Vercelli did try to hit back but came up against Costa in top form in the Novara net. From then till the end the visitors held out, but the win did come at a price as the heated tempers throughout the match boiled over at full time with keeper Costa and Signori both being given red cards after the final whistle.
For Vercelli meanwhile their fourth defeat in a row saw them give manager Cristiano Scazzola his P45 and replace him with Claudio Foscarini.
On Sunday Cagliari responded to Crotone going top the only way they knew how with a fine win at home to Cesena. Diego Farias opened the scoring on 37 minutes for the Rossoblu as his deflected effort from just inside the area managed to evade Gomis in the Cesena net.
Early into the second half the visitors thought they had drawn level, only for the goal to be ruled offside, replays suggest it was just about the right call by the linesman. Cagliari though did eventually double their lead just past the hour mark Marco Sau bumbling home after selfless work form Federico Melchiorri. With 18 minutes to play Cesena did give themselves a lifeline when Magnusson scored a free kick from an outrageous distance out.
That lifeline though was quickly snubbed out as only a minute later Melchiorri scored Cagliari’s third to propel them back to the top of the table.
It proved a good weekend for Bari as they moved up into fourth spot in the table after beating Virtus Lanciano in front of another bumper attendance at the Stadio San Nicola. It was a match that the Galletti that did nearly all of the running and probably should have won by more.
In the end though only one goal separated the sides but what a goal it was at that. Francesco Valliani picking the ball up well out to the left side of the box flicked it onto his right foot and then proceeded to curl an absolute peach of an effort into the top right corner. It was a goal of the highest quality from the former Parma man and enough to give his side three points.
Livorno’s poor form continued this weekend as they could only pick up a point at home to a struggling Avellino side. Marcello Trotta opened the scoring for the Lupi on 21 minutes finishing off a cut back by Francesco Tavano.
We would have to wait till early into the second half for the Amaranto to finally draw level the goal coming via a penalty from Gianluca Comi after a Biraschi handball that also earned the Avellino defender his second yellow.
Livorno would also be reduced to ten men before the end Moscati the man sent off as it finished all level in Tuscany.
On Sunday night Ascoli picked up their second win on the bounce as they overcame Massimo Oddo’s Pescara three-one. It was the Delfini though who opened the scoring through Gianluca Lapadula on the hour mark, tapping into an empty net.
It only took the Picchio eight minutes to get back level though Perez finishing low and hard into the bottom left. Then seven minutes from time Giorgi put the hosts in front as his volley was deflected into the right hand corner of the net. Petagna then rounded off the scoring for Ascoli with a penalty straight down the middle in the 94th minute.
Elsewhere this weekend Brescia beat Como three-one the goals coming from Abate, Geijo and Carracciolo. Ebagua with the reply for Como. Latina were another side to win away from home as they beat Modena two-nil at the Braglia, Olivera and Schiattarella with the goals in the second half.
Trapani continue their unbeaten start to the season with a one-nil away win against Salernitana, Citro with the goal on four minutes. Spezia were also one-nil winners over Ternana, Emanuele Calaio with the only goal on 23 minutes and finally Perugia’s poor start to the season continues as once again they were held scoreless at home drawing nil all against Virtus Entella.
