Serie B Mid-Term Report

It has been 113 days since the first ball was kicked in anger in the 2015/2016 Serie B season. In that timeframe we have seen some 543 goals scored in 229 matches giving us an average of 2.371 goals per game.

Mixed in with all that bountiful action has been shocks, surprises and sackings galore and amazingly we are still only at the half way point of the campaign.

The players and managers now however are on their well-earned break after a testing Christmas period. With the January transfer window about to open however that rest and relaxation will soon be disturbed.

Before any of that however it is time to give a rundown on how each of the 22 teams (from 1st to 22nd in table) have fared over the course of the first part of the season.

Welcome to the Serie B Mid-Season Report card.

Matos A Favorite for Atalanta

With the impending exit of Maxi Moralez, Atalanta have not wasted any time in identifying a worthy replacement.

As reported by Alfredo Pedulla, Carpi’s Ryder Matos has the right technical qualities that Edy Reja is looking for to give an added boost to his squad.

Matos is on loan at Carpi from Fiorentina and it is reported that Atalanta and La Viola have a very good working relationship, which is a positive sign that a deal can be worked out.

The San Juan born forward has featured a total of 18 times across all competitions for Carpi. His performances in the Coppa Italia have been instrumental in Carpi’s run to the Quarter-Finals, scoring three goals along the way.

Fiorentina Inquire About Andy Najar

If there is one thing that Fiorentina manager Paulo Sousa expects from his Scudetto-contending squad, it is balance in transitioning from attack to defence and vice-versa.

In his favored 3-4-2-1 formation, the movement of the outside midfield players is key with maximum attention given not only to their attacking prowess but their defensive contributions as well.

According to La Gazetta dello Sport, this is an area where Sousa feels La Viola need improving and he has already made it known to the club that he is in search of player who can create a numerical advantage in the final third and add defensive coverage off the ball.

The name that is highlighted on his list, is that of 22-year old Honduran midfielder Andy Najar, currently playing his football in Belgium for Anderlecht. Najar has made 17 Jupiler League appearances this term, racking up two goals and 5 yellow cards.

La Gazetta dello Sport reports that an inquiry has been made by Fiorentina and that the Honduran is valued at around €5 million. Gifted with good dribbling skills and an energetic on-field presence, Najar is also a former graduate of D.C. United’s academy, winning the MLS Rookie of the Year in 2010. On an international level, he has been capped 38 times for Honduras and was a member of their 2014 World Cup squad.

Norwich Favor Move for Ranocchia

For the time being, Andrea Ranocchia is still wearing the colors of the Nerazzurri but as the mercato approaches, he may soon be dawning the colors of a brand new club.

Corriere dello Sport reports that EPL side Norwich are very interested in the Italian international and consider him the ideal option to help guide the club towards safety. An official offer was presented to Inter, with the Italian club said to be in agreement with the €11 million proposal however reports from England are that the offer is much lower, around €7 million. The only piece missing from a potential deal is Ranocchia‘s approval. Sevilla are also reported to be interested in him as a replacement for the currently injured Marco Andreolli. Inter hope to close a deal soon in order to use the funds to reinforce their squad in the January window.

Ranocchia, however, prefers to remain in Italy. Bologna are in the picture as well as they want to take the defender on loan and can offer him an important role at the club. At the moment, Ranocchia is leaning more towards Bologna than an option abroad.

With the arrivals of Murillo and Miranda over the summer, the 27-year old has found in difficult to surpass either of them for a consistent spot in Inter’s backline. He has made 10 appearances so far this season with only one of them coming as a starter.

Best of the best: Top 11 Italians 2015

Today is the last day of 2015 and with the Euros just six months away, we take a look at who made the cut for our top 11 2015 Italians of the year. The players were selected based on a 4-4-2 formation.

GK: Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus)
What can be said about the legend Buffon that hasn’t been said already? ‎Like a fine wine he gets better with age and was so close in winning the treble. A leader on and off the pitch, both with Juventus and the Azzurri, no Italian goalkeeper comes close to Buffon.

Defenders:

Matteo Darmian (Manchester United):
Darmian had a spectacular start with his new club after his acquistion from Torino. Although his form of late hasn’t been great, there is no denying his skill on the flanks and his pace. He was the only member of the Azzurri to play in every Euro qualifier.

Alessandro Florenzi (Roma):
Florenzi has ‎demonstrated a tremendous versatility playing in different roles. He has the ability to play with tenacity and also display some great skill, as evidenced by that wonderful Champions League goal versus Barcelona which coincidentally, was selected as a finalist for the FIFA Puskas Award for the goal of the year.

Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus):
Chiellini was instrumental in playing a key role as part of the “blocco Juve” with both the bianconeri and the Azzurri. Apart from a few defensive lapses he had a pretty consistent seaso‎n, using his physicality well making him a stopper difficult to go through.

Leonardo Bonucci (Juventus):
Another key member of “blocco Juve” for Juventus and the Azzurri, Bonucci arguably played his best football ever in 2015, taking his game to another level. We saw flashes of offensive flair in addition to solid defending.

Midfielders:

Marco Verratti (Paris St. Germain):
Verratti led PSG to win the Ligue 1 championship and reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League losing to eventual winners Barcelona. He plays in the midfield at a high level, tracking balls and making wonderful plays with intricate passing.

Antonio Candreva (Lazio):
‎Always dangerous on the attack and plays at a full throttle pace, leading the charge for his team. Rarely do you see Candreva run out of gas and play fatigued. He is constantly in movement creating opportunities for his teammates.

Claudio Marchisio (Juventus):
Marchisio has definitely played his best football in 2015. He has really stepped up his game particularly with his passing, and rarely do you see him taking it easy on the pitch where he gives his all for his team.

Andrea Pirlo (New York City FC):
After helping Juventus win the scudetto he began a new adventure in MLS. Pirlo showed that despite his age, he still has a knack for making difficult passes look easy and always finds a way to get the ball to his teammates.

Domenico Berardi (Sassuolo):
Not only has Berardi been impressive with his goal scoring, but also with his playmaking abilities providing vital assists to his teammates. His goal total would be even higher if he had been given more service.

Sebastian Giovinco (Toronto FC):
MLS MVP and top goal scorer, Giovinco took North America by storm in his first season where he dominated the league. Dribbling, passing, scoring goals, always a threat putting fear into defenders who try to stop the atomic ant.

Honourable mentions:

Luca Toni (Verona), Graziano Pellè (Southampton),  Daniele Baselli (Torino)

Serie A 2015: The Best and the Worst Awards

As the year draws to a close, we decided to take a look back at 2015 in Serie A, and provide you with details of those individuals who we think deserve special mention.

Best Coach

There was only really one obvious candidate for Coach of 2015 – step forward Massimiliano Allegri. The Juventus coach almost guided the Bianconeri to an unprecedented treble of Scudetto, Coppa Italia and UEFA Champions League. His efforts thwarted in the final by a Barcelona team boasting the most prolific forward line that club football has ever seen.

Honourable mentions must go to Sassuolo coach, Eusebio Di Francesco, who continues to shine, and also the likes of Maurizio Sarri and Paulo Sousa who will be hoping that the first half of the 2015/2016 season are a sign of things to come for Napoli and Fiorentina respectively.

Best Value Signing

There were several candidates for this category, although based on his goals in the first half of the season, Fiorentina’s Nikola Kalinic takes the award. Kalinic joined Fiorentina in the summer transfer window for 5.5million Euros from Dnipro, having impressed in their Europa League run last season. Without his performances and goals, there is little doubt that Fiorentina would not be sitting second in Serie A.

Other candidates include Jeison Murillo who, at 8million Euros, has proved to be an astute signing by Roberto Mancini’s Inter. Murillo has formed an outstanding partnership with Miranda, and is already attracting admiring glances from Barcelona, Real Madrid and several Premier League clubs, including Liverpool.

Napoli had several candidates for this award, including Pepe Reina and Allan. Reina has excelled since returning to the San Paolo from Bayern Munich in the summer, and has been a pivotal part in Napoli’s push for the Scudetto and Europa League. Since signing from Udinese, Allan has proved to be Napoli’s conductor in midfield and, at 10million Euros, represented outstanding value for money.

If the title is to return to Naples for the first time since the days of Diego Maradona, then Reina and Allan are likely to be just as important as the likes of Gonazlo Higuain and Khadou Koulibaly.

Best Goal

It was very hard to whittle down the many great goals scored in Serie A this season, although we have tried our best. After much consideration, the winner is the goal scored by Marco Benassi for Torino against Palermo back in September. The goal brought comparisons with Marco Van Basten’s volley for The Netherlands in Euro 1988.

Other candidates included Andrea Pirlo’s free-kick for Juventus against Torino in April, whilst Mauricio Pinilla received several nominations for his fantastic bicycle kicks for Atalanta against Sassuolo in September, against Cagliari in February and against Torino in April. If there were an award for cumulative outstanding goals, Pinilla would be the undoubted clear winner.

An honourable mention must also go to the goal scored by Andrea Florenzi for Roma against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League group game.

Worst value signing

Whilst it is not usually the intention of us here are Italian Football Daily to belittle players, there have been several high value signings in 2015 who we felt have failed to perform.

As things stand, and although it is early days in his Serie A career, the undoubted winner of this category has been Geoffrey Kondogbia. Inter beat off competition from several Serie A and Premier League clubs to sign the French international from Monaco in the summer, although he came at a considerable price, 35million Euros to be precise. His performances to date have been little short of woeful, and he has much work to do in the second half of the season to justify his price tag.

There were several other players who came into this category, including Mario Suarez of Fiorentina, Luiz Adriano of Milan and Edin Dzeko of Roma. All have failed to live up to the expectations made of them when they arrived in Serie A in the summer.

Do you agree with our award winners? If not, let us know.

Exclusive: Discovering Bari’s New Coach, Andrea Camplone

Forty-nine year old Andrea Camplone is set to succeed Davide Nicola on Bari’s bench. As Camplone is unknown to many within the Italian footballing movement, we reached out to Robert Stillo – one of the men who formed part of his Perugia side that gained promotion with him in 2013-14 – to get to know Camplone better

The Stadio Curi is invaded by delirious fans, while the streets are inundated by sounds of horns of cars, with flags waving outside of them. It’s May 4, 2014 and the Grifoni, as Perugia’s team is often dubbed, had gained a historic promotion. The mastermind behind this great feat was Pescara-born-and-raised Andrea Camplone.

A year-and-a-half later, Camplone – ousted by Perugia management after navigating the Grifone to safety in his first season in Serie B – is set to take the seat in a prestigious piazza like Bari’s. In the Apulian capital, Paparesta has called an end to the reign of Davide Nicola whose has control of the Galletti has seemingly been lost. Bari’s brass were unable to digest the three consecutive defeats to Cagliari, Brescia and Trapani, deciding that a change at the helm was needed in order to stay in Serie B’s “promotion zone” and achieve a historic return to Serie A that has been missing since the days of “Mr. Libido”, Giampiero Ventura.

What kind of a coach are Bari fans to expect of Andrea Camplone? To find out we approached Roberto Stillo, former Perugia goalkeeper whom formed part of that Grifone side who achieved promotion in 2013-14 under the Abruzzese coach.

“Camplone is first and foremost a good person. He tries his best to relate to the players and take in their thoughts on certain situations which I think is important, having the support and respect of your players is a huge key to success”, Stillo exhalts Camplone’s human qualities.

A great coach, with good qualities and with a group of players whom respected him doesn’t sound like a recipe for sacking. When asked about the reasons why Camplone was let go Stillo remarks “it’s difficult to know the reasons from the outside for sure, but he had been at the helm for a long time and perhaps both he and management thought it was time for change”.

With the likes of Rosina, De Luca, Sabelli, and others Bari has a roster that is Serie B’s envy. Yet the team has failed to achieve that magical “chemistry” that is so often quoted, which might point to a failure on management’s side to create a cohesive environment. “When a team doesn’t like the coach, in most cases it’s the players that don’t respond to his efforts. In effect, the players rid themselves of a coach long before management. In my experience, we had a great group of players at Perugia and everyone was on the same page with our goals, objectives and how we wanted to go about achieving them. Camplone is a players’ coach so if anyone had any sort of problem they could go and speak to him directly”.

Palermo Move Forward for Sensi

One of Serie B’s brightest young talents is continuing to stir up conversations amongst many Serie A clubs.

Cesena’s midfield gem Stefano Sensi has been on the radar of Italy’s top clubs for the last few months.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Palermo’s Maurizio Zamparini absolutely wants to close a deal for the midfielder as soon as possible as Cesena will likely be anticipating many others offers for Sensi. Frequent calls have gone on between Palermo and Cesena with the Sicilian club feeling confident they could secure the ‘New Verratti’.

The 20 year-old Sensi spent the last two seasons on loan to Lega Pro side San Marino prior to rejoining Cesena. He has appeared in 18 of Cesena’s 21 games so far this season, scoring 3 goals and picking up 5 yellow cards.

Italians in England: The Christmas period performances

In our weekly feature, here on Italian Football Daily, we take a look at the performances of Italian players currently based in the top two divisions in England over the Christmas period.

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE

Claudio Ranieri (Manager – Leicester City)

Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester City went into the Christmas period top of the English Premier League, however they faced two tough fixtures against Liverpool and Manchester City which would be a test of their title credentials.

On Boxing Day, Leicester struggled against Liverpool, crashing to a 1-0 defeat against Jurgen Klopp’s team. The league leaders lack their usual high tempo and energy and struggled to break down the Liverpool defence, as they failed to score for the first time this season. Their star performers this season, Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez both struggled, with Ranieri explaining after the game that the former had played with a slight fever, whilst Mahrez was feeling tired after his outstanding first half of the season.

Three days later, Leicester hosted Manchester City at the Walker’s Stadium, and held the title favourites to a scoreless draw. City dominated the first half, but the Leicester defence held strong thanks to several good saves by Kasper Schmeichel. Leicester did have the best chance of the game, but Jamie Vardy fired over when through one on one with Joe Hart after defensive errors by Nicolas Otamendi and Eliaquim Mangala. The draw kept Leicester in second place in the Premier League table, ahead of their opponents.

With the January transfer window coming up, the biggest challenge facing Ranieri will be holding onto his star players of the first half of the season, with several clubs having expressed interest in signing Vardy, Mahrez and N’Golo Kante.

Matteo Darmian (Manchester United)

Matteo Darmian has missed the last four Manchester United games due to the hamstring injury that he picked up against Wolfsburg in United’s midweek defeat in the UEFA Champions League.

He returned to the United starting line-up for their home game against Chelsea and acquitted himself well in the left-back position. Although lack of match fitness meant that he only lasted 70 minutes on his return from injury, he showed several glimpses of the form which he showed on arrival at Old Trafford back in August, particularly in his support of Anthony Martial when United were attacking. One hopes that Darmian’s last few performances have seen him overcome the dip in form in mid-October that saw him relegated to the United bench for several games in late October/early November.

Angelo Ogbonna (West Ham United)

Angelo Ogbonna has put in several excellent performances over the past few weeks following his return to the West Ham United after injury saw him miss virtually all of September, October and November.

Ogbonna continued that impressive form over the festive period as West Ham collected four points out of a possible six, as they drew 1-1 with Aston Villa on Boxing Day and then defeated Southampton 2-1 on Monday. Despite an impressive performance against Villa, Ogbonna was responsible for the penalty from which Villa equalised as he clumsily brought down Rudy Gestede. The challenge also earnt Ogbonna a booking, and was the only way that Villa looked like scoring throughout the game.

Graziano Pelle (Southampton)

Graziano Pelle missed both of Southampton’s fixtures over the Christmas period with a knee injury. In his absence, the Saints astounded everyone with a 4-0 defeat over Arsenal on Boxing Day. The Saints hadn’t won for seven matches, and most watchers expected Arsenal to emerge comprehensive winners. Two days later, Pelle was missing again as Southampton crashed to a 2-1 defeat away at West Ham United.

Fabio Borini & Vito Mannone (Sunderland)

Fabio Borini continued his run of games in the Sunderland starting eleven, by scoring for the second consecutive game as the Black Cats fell to a 4-1 defeat away at Manchester City on Boxing Day. Borini’s goal however made little difference to the pattern of the game, coming when the hosts were already four goals ahead.

Vito Mannone started the game against Manchester City, but had little chance with any of City’s four goals. Mannone gave the scoreline some semblance of respectability, making good saves from Wilfried Bony, Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva in the second half.

Sunderland’s tough Christmas period got no easier four days later, as they hosted Liverpool at the Stadium of Light. As a reward for his performances against City and Chelsea, Borini kept his place in the starting line-up as Sunderland looked to move out of the relegation zone and, along with Duncan Whatmore, he was once again Sunderland’s brightest attacking threat.

Sunderland’s best chance of the game fell to Borini after he managed to skip past two Liverpool defenders in the penalty area, but was only able to shoot straight at Simon Mignolet. Mannone had little chance with Christian Benteke’s 46th minute goal, but did prevent the Belgium international doubling Liverpool’s lead in the last minute of the match, saving well when Benteke broke clear of Sunderland defence.

Alessandro Diamanti (Watford)

Alessandro Diamanti was, once again, an unused substitute in Watford’s 2-2 draw against Chelsea away at Stamford Bridge on Boxing Day, and also in Watford’s 2-1 home defeat against Tottenham Hotspur two days later.

The former Brescia, Bologna and Fiorentina star has featured infrequently this season for The Hornets, and one would not be surprised if he pushes for a move away from Vicarage Road during the January transfer window.

ENGLISH CHAMPIONSHIP

Fernando Forestieri (Sheffield Wednesday)

Fernando Forestieri continued his impressive form this season, by twice finding the net for Sheffield Wednesday in their 3-1 win over Birmingham City on Boxing Day. The win was enough to move Wednesday up to seventh place in the table, as their push for promotion continued.

Two days later, Forestieri was only a half-time substitute as Wednesday travelled to top of the table Middlesbrough in what was to prove a cagey game. Forestieri was dropped to the substitutes’ bench, following complaining of tiredness after playing 72 minutes in Wednesday’s Boxing Day game. He struggled to have any significant impact on the match, having several shots from the edge box blocked by the ‘Boro defence. Forestieri did have a chance midway through the second half, but fired wide from close range after a goalmouth melee following a corner.

Diego Fabbrini (on loan from Watford) & Michael Agazzi (Middlesbrough)

Middlesbrough only played one game over the Christmas period due to their game against Blackburn Rovers being called off on Boxing Day due to a waterlogged pitch. Two days later, they overcame Fernando Forestieri’s Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 to maintain their position at the top of the Championship table.

Fabbrini was a 62nd minute substitute, and lead the line well as ‘Boro tried to extend their lead, but few opportunities came his way.

Michael Agazzi did not feature in Middlesbrough’s squad for this fixture.

Mirco Antenucci, Giuseppe Bellusci, Marco Silvestri & Tommaso Bianchi (Leeds United)

Massimo Cellino’s Leeds United continued their run of good form over the festive period, moving into twelfth place in the Championship table.

On Boxing Day, Leeds were held to a 1-1 draw away at Nottingham Forest. Unfortunately, the Forest goal came from a mix-up between Marco Silvestre and Giuseppe Bellusci, as both failed to clear a long ball over the top, allowing Nelson Olivereia to walk the ball into an unguarded goal. Silvestre did however redeem himself, making several smart saves to keep the Forest attack at bay, before Leeds equalised with ten minutes of the match remaining to earn a point. Antenucci came on with thirteen minutes of the game, and immediately had a chance to level the scores but fired badly wide when given a half-chance. As has been the case for much of this season, Tomasso Bianchi did not make the Leeds match-day squad.

Three days later, Leeds hosted promotion chasing Derby County at Elland Road, in a fixture that was scheduled to be shown on television. In protest at the number of times that Leeds have had fixtures moved to accommodate the television companies, Cellino initially threatened to prevent Sky Sports accessing the ground to televise the match, but finally relented on the afternoon of the match. The match proved to be a thriller, as Leeds led 2-1 going into the last 12 minutes of the game, but Thomas Ince, son of the former Inter star Paul Ince, scored meaning the teams shared the points at Elland Road.

Of the Italians at Elland Road, only Silvestre made the starting line-up for Leeds; both Antenucci and Bellusci were unused substitutes, whilst Bianchi once again failed to make the match-day squad. Silvestre played his part in the match, saving well from Bradley Johnson late in the game to earn Leeds a point.

Francesco Pisano (Bolton Wanderers)

Francesco Pisano was not included in Bolton Wanderers’ squad for their 4-0 defeat at Rotherham United on Boxing Day, or their 1-0 home victory over Lancashire rivals, Blackburn Rovers.

Gabriele Angella (Queens Park Rangers – on loan from Watford)

Gabrielle Angella played the full game as Queens Park Rangers crashed to a 2-1 defeat away at Ipswich Town, thanks to a 90th minute goal from Luke Chambers.

Angella was an unused substitute in QPR’s 1-1 draw at home to Huddersfield Town. QPR looked to be heading for the win when, once again, they conceded in the 90th minute, to cost themselves two points.

Since Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink took over as manager on 12 December, QPR have failed to win any of their last six games, a run which has seen them lose touch with those challenging for a play-off place.

Federico Macheda (Cardiff City)

Federico Macheda was not selected in Cardiff City’s match-day squad for their 2-1 defeat at MK Dons on Boxing Day. Two days later, Macheda was an 82nd minute substitute as Cardiff were held to a 1-1 draw away at Nottingham Forest. Macheda had little chance to make an impact, and one wonders whether he might look to move onto pastures new in January.

Henrique well on his way to joining Fluminense

The Brazilian versatile defender was bought by Napoli in the winter of 2014 to add depth to a then weak back-line. Henrique seems all but settled on making a return to his home country of Brazil.

Brazilian defender Henrique has found it very tough to make it into Maurizio Sarri’s Napoli side this year, having not made one appearance for the club.  It looks as if he is ready to pack his bags and return to his beloved Brazil to play with Fluminense.  Henrique only made 22 appearances for the partenopei and scored one goal against Catania 2 seasons ago.

Today, Sky Italia reports that directors from Fluminense have made the trek to Napoli’s training ground Castelvolturno in Caserta.  Their main mission is to iron out the last details of the deal that would bring 2 million euros back into Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis’ wallet. Henrique is expected to sign a three year deal with the Brazilian club.

Roma Mercato Preview

It’s been a Topsy-Turvy start to the season for Roma, but what can they do in the January transfer window?

Roma have had one of the most bizarre seasons so far in almost all of Europe. In the beginning, they seemed Serie A favorites, slipped a bit in late September but then lived up to those expectations by taking up 1st place by week 10.

Now week 17, Roma are 5th, 4 points back of 1st with coach Rudi Garcia on the hot seat.

In the Champions League Roma somehow managed to get out of their group with just 6 points, the lowest in the whole tournament for teams who went on. Expect Roma to be busy on the market as January will give Walter Sabatini some time to fix certain holes that stop Roma from becoming Scudetto worthy.

WHOS COMING IN?

This team lacks depth and options in the defence. Roma for the most part have had a free flowing attack but a very shaky defense. Sabatini will look to bring in guys to help improve in that area.
For the right back position it’s just been reported that Debuchy of Arsenal and former Lille player under Rudi Garcia has just become an option. About a month ago reports of Bruno Peres in January were hot, but those cooled down and it seems unlikely.
For center back we’ve heard many names, Juan Jesus, Sakho and Lorenzo Tonelli are some with Juan Jesus looking like a serious option because he can be put into a deal for Ljajic.
At left back Roma will look at Bosnian Kolasinac with his alternative being Barcelona’s Adriano, who can also play right back. In attack Roma will look to replace Juan Manuel Iturbe and the names are Diego Perotti, Jermaine Lens, Alessio Cerci & Stephen El Shaarawy.
The favorite as we speak is Diego Perotti and there has been ongoing contact and meetings between Roma and Genoa for the player. In the latest hours though El Shaarawy has become a serious option because Sabatini likes him, he wants to return to Italy. He can play all  the attacking roles in Garcia’s 4-3-3 formation and he can arrive on loan. Di Marzio reported that contact between Sabatini & Monaco have started.

WHOS LEAVING?

Roma will look at this January transfer market to also offload some ‘dead meat’. Roma are looking to sell Torosidis who has drawn interest from Torino and Genoa. Him being in a deal for Perotti is very possible like i mentioned earlier.
Next is Ashley Cole. Yes he is still a Roma player.. After not wanting to terminate his contract in the summer Roma were forced to keep him. But they have done nothing with him. All he does is train with the team at Trigoria and gets paid. What a life, eh? Anyways, Roma don’t want Cole anymore and he’s drawing interest from teams in the MLS, the big one is from the LA Galaxy.
It has been reported that Real Madrid are strongly interested in Miralem Pjanic but their interest looks to be shut down because it’s been reported that James Pallotta doesn’t want to sell his Little Prince.
In the attack the only sell Roma will make is Juan Iturbe, who’s move to Bournemouth is virtually official. Iturbe will move to the English club on loan for €2m with an option to buy at €22m. Some reports state that the option to buy becomes mandatory after a certain amount of games played.
If Bournemouth use the option to buy, Roma will actually make profit on Iturbe, which would be pretty amazing considering how much he flopped in Rome. Lastly, Roma still own Seydou Doumbia, so expect Roma to do something with him as they might look to sell him permanently away from the club.

Roma and Genoa Work Towards Signing El Shaarawy and Rossi

With the January transfer window set to open, both Roma and Genoa are looking to add players to their team to help achieve their respective objectives.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Walter Sabatini has already contacted Milan over the availability of Stephan El Shaarawy. The Italy international is set to return to Milan following his loan stint at Monaco as he didn’t make enough appearances to trigger the automatic buy-out clause. With the sale of Juan Iturbe to Bournemouth, Rudi Garcia’s side are said to be in the market for another winger and view Il Faraone as the ideal target.

Another player who appears to be on his way out from his current club is Giuseppe Rossi. Di Marzio reports that Genoa and Fiorentina have already began talking about a potential transfer. The Fiorentina forward hasn’t gotten much playing time due to the emergence of Nikola Kalinic and is keen on a move away. One way the grifoni may sign Rossi is by selling Diego Perotti. The Argentine has no shortage of suitors and may be sold in the January transfer window.

While the numbers and finer details of the transactions are yet to be defined, these are the two likeliest destinations for El Shaarawy and Rossi.

Rossi has made 13 appearances in all competitions this season with five coming off the bench and scored two goals in the process. El Shaarawy, on the other hand, has made 21 appearances in all competitions, ten of which came from the bench, scoring two goals and registering one assist.

Mercato Preview: Lazio

With the January transfer window right around the corner, we take a look at what’s in store for Lazio.

The first half of the Serie A season has been a difficult one for Lazio. Their mercato philosophy going into the campaign was to prioritize retaining their stars over bringing in new players. Lazio focused on signing young role players who could be slowly introduced into the line up. This strategy failed, as they did not acquire the help needed both in attack and in defense. Injuries to Miroslav Klose and Stefan de Vrij put significant strain on Lazio and it showed. The capital club now sits squarely in the middle of the table but played their best game of the season right before the break. With the January window opening up Lazio fans are hoping that Claudio Lotito can bring in the reinforcements needed in order to salvage the season.

Who’s In –

Traditionally Claudio Lotito avoids making major moves during the winter transfer window however Lazio cannot afford to be idle this year based on their current position in the standings. The glaring need for the team is in defense, as they have been rotating the same three central defenders every week. Some of the players that have been linked to Lazio are: Gustavo Cabral, Andrea Ranocchia, and Nikolas N’Koulou. Another player who looks to be heading to Rome is goalie Lovre Kalinic, which is quickly becoming a need position as Lazio are having a difficult time in agreeing on a contract extension with Federico Marchetti.

Who’s Out –

There is a suspicion that most of Lazio’s moves will involve players leaving instead of joining. Some big names have been linked to Europe’s best teams. Manchester United have been linked to Felipe Anderson since the summer and these rumors have not gone away. Other big names such as Antonio Candreva and Lucas Biglia are also on the radar of Inter. As mentioned earlier Marchetti may also be on his way out as Liverpool are said to be interested in the keeper. Beyond the big names there have also been reports that both Ravel Morrison and Santiago Gentiletti are unhappy at the team and are petitioning for a change of scenery. It seems highly unlikely that Lazio will sell any of the Anderson, Biglia, Candreva trio however nothing is for sure after Lotito sold the fan favorite Hernanes in the 2014 winter window.

Final Word –

With each passing day more and more names will be linked with Lazio based on their current position and glaring needs. It is important to remember that this is a team that is historically quiet in the winter and this year should be no exception. Look for Lazio to sign or loan in just a few players to reinforce their defense with a new striker being a wildcard position.

Calcio tactics through time: José Mourinho’s Inter Milan (2008-10)

José Mourinho with Inter Milan (2008 – 2010)
  • Serie A: 2008–09, 2009–10
  • Coppa Italia: 2009–10
  • Supercoppa Italiana: 2008
  • UEFA Champions League: 2009–10

Few men have caught the attention of the media, fans and other managers during their time in Italian football quite like José Mourinho. Despite winning three Serie A titles in a row, Roberto Mancini was sacked at the end of the 2007/08 season, due to him claiming he would leave at the end of the season but quickly reversed his decision the following day. It was too late, the trust between Mancini and then Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti had been broken. Besides, Moratti had his sights set on one of the hottest commodities in world football, José Mourinho.

By the time Mourinho had arrived in Italy, the self proclaimed Special One had already made himself a powerful and authoritative figure, but there was one key game in Mourinho’s first season, that would shape Mourinho’s, Inter Milan’s and Italy’s footballing history. Mourinho was outwitted by Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson in the last sixteen round of the Champions League.

Goals from future Nerazzurri player Nemanja Vidic and Cristiano Ronaldo pushed Jose Mourinho to defeat on the stage that had made him famous in 2004. Mourinho had promised Moratti the Holy Grail of European football, something Inter Milan hadn’t won since 1965, with Helenio Herrera’s famous Catenaccio side lifting the trophy. Inter Milan’s failure to lift Europe’s greatest prize had haunted Moratti since he took over the side in 1995, perhaps Moratti predicted this would be one of his last chances to make an impact in Europe. So in the summer of 2009, Inter Milan went big.

The key departure in the summer of 2009 was Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who left for reigning European champions Barcelona, yet as always with Ibrahimovic, the team seemed better off in Europe without him. The Nerazzurri received Cameroon international Samuel Eto’o, the prototypical Mourinho forward. Inter then used the Ibrahimovic money to sign Diego Milito, who would have an historic season, Wesley Sneijder, Thiago Motta and Lucio. All these parts would be far greater than the individual talent of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

José Mourinho’s tenure at the Giuseppe Meazza can essentially be split into two different teams, there was the Zlatan Ibrahimovic team, and there was the treble winning team. And one blows the other out of the water. Guess which.

The Zlatan Ibrahimovic team

inter08

The exact XI of this side is difficult to pinpoint due to injuries suffered throughout the campaign. Walter Samuel made 17 appearances, Christian Chivu 21 and Nicolás Burdisso 21 in a revolving door of a backline.

The big Swede’s 2008-09 season is his second best season statistically, we have to pay homage to Zlatan’s 2011-12 season, in which he scored a jaw dropping 28 goals in 32 Serie A games, along with 35 goals in 44 appearances in all competitions. In Mourinho’s first season, Zlatan scored 25 goals in 35 Serie A matches, 29 in 47 across all competitions.

In the attacking department, this team was rather lacklustre, so it’s no wonder the Swede contributed to 28% of Inter’s goals in the league (they scored 70, the standard rate for Scudetto winners), after Zlatan, Inter’s next highest goal contributor came from a young, flamboyant talent named Mario Balotelli, who scored eight league goals. After that? It’s only Dejan Stanković who scored a modest five goals. As per a standard Mourinho team, he demanded goal contributions from everyone in the team.

But Zlatan was still the big cheese. In fact throughout Mourinho’s career almost all of his teams have been the epitome of ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts’. His Porto team emphasised this to the greatest extent, with perhaps the greatest underdog story in European football.  The only team that did arguably not follow this status quo of Mourinho was his Real Madrid side, starring Cristiano Ronaldo. But selling the then one time Balon D’or winner would be unthinkable. Much like Mourinho’s first season at Inter, everything would have to run through Zlatan, at Real Madrid everything ran through Cristiano Ronaldo. And his time at the Spanish capital was arguably a failure, because La Décima was not delivered.

Zlatan had made no secret of his love for Barcelona, so when the opportunity came for him to move, Moratti and Mourinho would have considered the footballing juggernaut they could build with riches from his sale, combined with Moratti’s own fortune.

Inter Milan’s main transfer dealings in the summer of 2009:

IN; Wesley Sneijder £10.5m, Gabriel Milito £17.5m, Samuel Eto’o (included in Zlatan deal, valued at £18m), Thiago Motta £7m, Lucio £4.9m.

OUT; Zlatan Ibrahimovic £60m (total deal value), Maxwell £3m.

The treble winning team

inter

I really want to spend the majority of this article talking about the treble winning team, since this is the pinnacle of Italian football. After Juventus’ failure at the last hurdle in Berlin, Inter Milan remains the only Italian team to have done that seemingly elusive treble.

What a team. Seemingly created by a watchmaker, building a side that was almost perfectly built for European football, combined with a manager who thrives in Europe’s biggest competition.

Mourinho once claimed that Serie A was “the tactical league.” and Serie A almost seemed like it was created for  José Mourinho. He did not need to slow down the pace of games to suit his team, as most games were played out at a pace that would seem foreign to those in England. Tactics are discussed and implemented at a far high level than most leagues across Europe and the man who had guided Porto to a Champions League in the modern era was one of the best tacticians around.

This team really embodied Mourinho, players sacrificing goals and assists for the betterment of the team, a solid foundation at the back and a rather defensive midfield pivot.

Let’s start from the back. Júlio César is not built in the typical Mourinho goalkeeper build. He measures up at 6 ft 1 and doesn’t possess the physical presence of a Petr Cech or Thibaut Courtois, but the qualities Júlio César lacked in physical stature, he made up for with his incredible reflexes and reading of the game. The five time Scudetto winner always seemed one step ahead of the opposition, always seemingly knowing what they were going to do next. Playing behind a defense in a deep block is always going to require superb anticipation and reflexes due to a high volume of shots outside the box.

Lucio also arrived in 2009 and it’s definitely not a mystery why Mourinho identified him in his quest for the Holy Grail. The Brazilian’s ability to operate in a deep block but also operate in a high line when the team is in possession made him perfect for European football, such versatility isn’t that rare, but to do it at an elite level is. Walter Samuel underwent a renaissance under Mourinho, as it could be argued the Portuguese manager is a centre back whisperer of sorts. The Argentine spent the majority of his career at the Giuseppe Meazza, but the three seasons prior to the treble winning campaign, he had played a combined 65 games in all competitions, in 2009/10, he played 42. Mourinho understood the limitations of Samuel’s body at the age of 32, but much like John Terry last season, Mourinho’s defensive system is very easy in a medical sense on centre backs.

Much like my Ancelotti piece (a shameless plug here), Maicon played a similar role to Cafu in those Milan teams. As I spoke about earlier regarding players buying into the Mourinho philosophy of sacrificing your own accolades for the good of team, Samuel Eto’o embodied this. Before being involved in the Zlatan transfer that brought him to the Giuseppe Meazza, Eto’o had just finished a historic season with Barcelona as they won their own treble in Pep Guardiola’s first season, with Eto’o scoring 30 goals in 36 games. The Cameroonian enjoyed operating in an attacking trio of himself, Lionel Messi and Thierry Henry, except Eto’o was the king of the castle, operating centrally. It’s worth noting Pep did experiment in the odd game with Messi in a false nine position, with Eto’o out wide.

So when he arrived at Inter Milan in the same summer as Diego Milito, there was going to be a little dilemma. Diego Milito was clearly the epitome of a classic number nine, whereas Eto’o had qualities which meant he could function out wide. But this isn’t FIFA Career Mode, we’re dealing with real human beings here, how was Eto’o, a player whom had been deemed surplus to requirements by Pep Guardiola because the Spaniard only liked ‘good boys with no personality’ going to take being shunned out wide? Actually, he took it fine. Mourinho exercised his famed man management and sold Eto’o on working for the good of the team.

The result? Eto’o scored 12 goals in 32 league games, 16 games in 48 games in all competitions, his lowest total since the 2006/07 season in which he only played 27 games. Before that? the 2001/02 season, when Eto’o was only 20 years old. This was unprecedented in Eto’o’s career, but Mourinho somehow sold it to him.

What a diversion, but back to Maicon. While Mourinho enjoys rigidity in his formations, Eto’o would drift inwards to act as a secondary striker or just a second centre forward, this would leave a huge gap on the right side. But much like Cafu in his prime, Maicon could control an entire flank of the pitch. The Brazilian had the intelligence to know when to push up and when to drop back but also the engine to do it for large parts of the game.

maicon

The aftermath looked like a 3-4-1-2. This tactical change was also made highly effective by Inter’s midfield. In Esteban Cambiasso Mourinho possessed one of the finest readers of the game in Europe, if not the finest. With Maicon pushing up, Esteban Cambiasso had to keep a sharp eye on the right side, while Lucio moved over to the right, Mourinho seemed to deem a back three too dangerous. Cambiasso essentially helped fill in for three roles, right back, centre back and central midfield.

The Argentine was a key cog in the watch of Inter’s Milan system. While Maicon was playing right wing, Cambiasso was covering the defensive right hand lane and the middle of the pitch. Cambiasso’s almost other worldly reading and understanding of the game allowed him to fulfill a role that almost no midfielder in world football could fulfill. He was everywhere seemingly at once. Combined with a surreal reading of the game which allowed for Cambiasso to intercept seemingly every through ball, he was also able to build from deep. This allowed for quick counter attacks as the man who intercepted a pass wastes no time redistributing it to another player and the counter attack can be started efficiently.

Wesley Sneijder’s peak is rather simple to identify. It’s the 2009/10 season. The Dutch midfielder had been labelled yet another wonder kid from the Ajax production line, and was subsequently labelled as an underachiever during his time at Real Madrid. The boy from Utrecht found peace in his time at Inter and specifically under Mourinho. With a midfield pivot of Cambiasso and either Stankovic/Motta/Zanetti, Sneijder was given a role in which he could flourish. Sneijder always had midfielders that could initiate the first attacking phase, meaning he could focus in the most crucial part in the final third.

Sneijder truly embodied the modern number ten, which is a dying art in itself. While Sneijder could thread the needle through the smallest of holes, create space for himself and his teammates at will he could also win the ball back even though he was a number ten, a true Mourinho trait. Marcello Lippi pinned number tens winning the ball back as one of the most important traits for a modern number ten “It is important for a number ten to win the ball back in the modern game. There is such little space that you cannot allow the opponent to even initiate their attack.”

While he had a superb pivot behind him, Sneijder still worked to win the ball back, a crucial part of Mourinho’s ‘family’ philosophy. Even in defensive setups, Sneijder was aware of his role and that he would see the ball sparingly, a feature that most number tens do not possess.

The triumph of defensive over offensive

Barcelona 1 Inter Milan 0, 3-2 to Inter Milan on aggregate as they advanced to the Champions League final. This game had everything and was arguably the real Champions League final. Mourinho’s relationship with Barcelona would be intriguing to the most qualified of psychologists. Mourinho began at Barcelona working as a translator under Bobby Robson and later as an assistant to Louis Van Gaal. In a Champions League tie in 2005, Mourinho accused then Barcelona manager Frank Rijkaard of going into referee Anders Frisk’s dressing at half time, thus implying the game had a cheating edge to it. Frisk came under a torrent of abuse and would never referee again. UEFA’s head of refereeing labelled Mourinho ‘the enemy of football’.

BARCELONA, SPAIN - APRIL 28: Inter Milan manager Jose Mourinho sits on the bench before the UEFA Champions League Semi Final Second Leg match between Barcelona and Inter Milan at Camp Nou on April 28, 2010 in Barcelona, Spain. (Photo by Michael Regan/Getty Images)

In 2008, Mourinho was shortlisted for the then vacant Barcelona managerial position. Mourinho presented as to why he would be the best candidate for the job to Joan Laporta and the Barcelona board. But due to past clashes and a disagreement on philosophy, Barcelona opted for former captain Pep Guardiola. Barcelona would then go on to win the treble. Mourinho went to Inter.

The semi final tie in 2010 was the epitome of the two sides of football. On one hand we had Pep Guardiola, working in Sunny Spain where the football is free flowing and goals are aplenty. On the other hand we had Jose Mourinho, working in ‘dreary’ Italy where the football is rigid and home of the quote ‘the perfect game of football is 0-0’. This was a clash of philosophies and clubs.

2010

A two goal lead against the reigning European champions isn’t your typical two goal lead at all. Inter’s 4-2-3-1 was asymmetrical so Christian Chivu could double up on the right hand side with Javier Zanetti. This was not only to deal with reigning world player of the year Lionel Messi, but also to help deal with Dani Alves’ overlapping runes. Mourinho’s confidence in his side’s defensive capability was show cased by conceding the left hand side of the pitch. A dangerous move considering Xavi was operating there.

While Mourinho has often being accused of engaging in the dark arts of football, it was arguably Barcelona who engaged in such tactics in the tie. It was during this tie that the ‘Sergio Busquets diving’ jokes started, in case you didn’t see it, you can watch it here. Thiago Motta was robbed of competing in a Champions League final but a more worrying event was occuring right then, as Inter Milan went down to ten men and would have to play against Barcelona with ten men for over an hour.

20101

Mourinho completely conceded any kind of attacking threat and just seemed to hold out hope that his Inter Milan side could hang on. Chivu moved into a central defensive position to once again crowd the final third and hinder any of Messi’s mazy runs. Eto’o and Milito once again embodied the ‘working for the team’ philosophy of Mourinho and acted as defensive wingers but really, were just acting as extra defensive bodies.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic faced his old club, who were probably the best equipped club in Europe to handle him. Inter’s deep block and crowded final third meant Zlatan had little room to operate. Both Lucio and Samuel were physical enough to deal with the Swede, while the absence of Andres Iniesta meant Barcelona struggled to feed Ibrahimovic in the box. Zlatan only had 25 touches before being taken off in the 62nd minute.

Lionel Messi could not find any space in the final third to even begin a run or create space for a teammate. The Argentine was kicked, knocked and took a physical beating, it’s also easy to forget that little Leo was only 22 when this game took place, while he was the best player in the world, Inter Milan appeared to get under his skin. Something he has grown out of since. Every time Messi touched the ball, Chivu was there to knock him, and he would only run into a crowded Inter box with the likes of Lucio and Zanetti ready to greet him. Pedro also suffered the same fate and was unable to make any runs between the lines as Maicon, while known for his attacking qualities, acted in a deep block superbly and was not tempted to burst forward at any point.

Dani Alves offered very little in terms of an offensive threat, as Eto’o, although not an astute defensive winger by any stretch of the imagination, was a total nuisance towards him for the better part of an hour.

The midfield battle was dominated by one man and one man only, Esteban Cambiasso. I could sing his praises all day long but that night he was superb. He made Chivu’s uncomfortable role in midfield a lot easier by directing him but also covering him when Xavi was dictating play. Inter Milan only managed 19% possession and 290 touches of the ball, compared to Barcelona’s 917. It was a clash of philosophies. And defensive football won. Mourinho won. As he is so accustomed to doing so.

The crowning moment

mesutffs

Mourinho met his former mentor in the final after that famous Barcelona tie, while Bayern had just defeated Lyon 4-0 on aggregate as the golden era at the Stade de Gerland was coming to an end before our very eyes.

Inter Milan lined up in a flexible 4-2-3-1 as they had done predominantly in Europe all season. Due to Inter’s disciplined wingers (I’ve given special mention to Eto’o, but bravo to Goran Pandev for knowing his career limits and just aimlessly following Mourinho’s orders on the way to a treble), they could shift to a 4-4-1-1/4-4-2, with Wesley Sneijder playing the hybrid role of a number ten/supporting striker just off Diego Milito. As pointed out previously, Sneijder could also drop deep and possessed the ball winning skills of the modern number ten, thus making it a more compact 4-3-3, but did sacrifice goal scoring ability.

Wesley Sneijder’s ability to play just about any role required in the final third was illustrated in this match, particularly for the first goal, in which the Dutchman could have been mistaken for being a supporting striker rather than a number ten. In fact, Sneijder turned out to be the x-factor in this match. The age old ‘you lose the midfield battle, you lose the game’ saying rang true, while both teams lined up in what could be considered a 4-2-3-1, Inter held a numerical advantage due to Thomas Müller not acting as a midfielder, while Sneijder did drop deep. Van Bommel and Schweinsteiger were forced to deal with Javier Zanetti and Esteban Cambiasso in a two versus two battle, this of course left Sneijder free. Van Bommel had the stricter defensive duties of the pairing but if he were to drop deeper to mark Sneijder, then Cambiasso and Zanetti would completely dominate the midfield and Bayern’s attack would be left stranded.

This led to Sneijder’s supporting striker-esque role, as Demichelis or Van Buyten had to pick him up, otherwise his playmaking abilities would lead to a plethora of chances. This is shown in the first goal, as all it takes was Diego Milito to go one on one with Demichelis for the first goal. I haven’t talked about the Argentine much in this article and for that I’m sorry. He was arguably the perfect striker for Mourinho’s system, systematically clinical which is an invaluable asset in Europe, specifically when adopting a defensive approach. Milito would only get a select few chances throughout Inter’s run to final and he took them all brilliantly, specifically his goal against Barcelona in the first leg. But of course his own crowning moment, as well as Inter’s, was the final. Milito took his first goal brilliantly and his second was beautiful in its own way.

A counter attack led to Eto’o giving Milito the ball one on one with Van Buyten, the Argentine dribbles from the 35 yard mark all the way to the penalty area, before cutting inside, re-adjusting his body and finishing past Butt. In Inter’s hour of need the Argentine and been at his absolute best.

Inter’s defensive pivot was arguably the key to the game for me. Arjen Robben had yet to hit his peak in a Bayern shirt but was still one of Europe’s elite wingers under Van Gaal. The Dutchman has never needed any kind of invitation to cut inside on that left foot and Javier Zanetti had been watching the tape. While Thiago Motta being suspending was a sad occurrence, Zanetti was far better suited for this game. Christian Chivu was more than a capable defensive left back, but when the Dutchman would cut inside, Zanetti would be there to help out his teammate. This would often mean Robben would have to recycle possession back to the midfield, have a weak shot or cross to a teammate, which the Inter defenders handled with ease.

Bayern’s Ivica Olić was no Diego Milito, in that he could not occupy the attention of two centre backs and could be handled by either Samuel/Lucio while the other kept an eye on a young starlet by the name of Thomas Müller, who was busy pretty much inventing his own role of the raumdeuter, however he couldn’t convert any of his chances. Every member of Bayern’s attack was accounted for by an Inter Milan defender, whereas Inter’s was not and that was arguably the difference between the two teams.

A team as defensively drilled as Inter Milan was always going to be able to see this game out and the second goal in the seventieth minute completely killed the game off.

2009/10 Inter Milan’s impact on football

After this game English journalist Jonathan Wilson, author of ‘Inverting The Pyramid’ wrote an article in The Guardian asking if defensive football was the future. But of course, the following year arguably the greatest ever club side won the Champions League, Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona won the hearts of many with their awe-inspiring football. But then…the following year Chelsea caused one of the biggest upsets in European football as they beat Bayern on penalties in their own stadium…while playing defensive football. The next two years it was won by counter attacking teams with solid defensive foundations.

This side was not a Michels Ajax or a Sacchi Milan, it didn’t revolutionise football. But for me it taught me that European football is a lot different to league football. Defensive solidarity and tactics go a lot further in Europe than they do in league play because you have a lot less chances to win. This arguably makes Mourinho one of the most perfect managers for European games.

Speaking of the self proclaimed Special One whom is currently unemployed, what next? Well, Inter Milan have only just rebuilt from Mourinho and Moratti going ‘all in’ during the summer of 2009, and as soon as Mourinho reached the peak with Inter he left. The Portuguese manager still remains a win now manager, trophies are almost a certainty, but stability and financial security are not guaranteed. The truth is this is where football is heading. No more Sir Alex Fergusons or Arsène Wengers, clubs will have four year windows with a win now manager in which to obtain silverware, like what Real Madrid are doing.

A quote to end it all

“It’s not important how we play. If you have a Ferrari and I have a small car, to beat you in a race I have to break your wheel or put sugar in your tank.”

Patrick Mork, “Zielinski to Napoli? We will discuss it in the summer”

Piotr Zielinski has had a very eventful Serie A campaign so far this season, being largely effective in essentially every single game he has featured in.  It comes to no surprise that a team like Napoli are interested in the Polish youngster.

Having recorded a goal and 3 assists so far this campaign, Zielinski (21) has caught the eyes of many top Italian teams, namely Napoli.  Maurizio Sarri has expressed a desire for his former colleague’s (Empoli) signature. This comes to no surprise as Sarri in the past has already expressed interest in former players, like Mirko Valdifiori, Matias Vecino, Elseid Hysaj, and now Piotr Zielinski.

His agent, Patrick Mork, in an interview with Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli said, “Piotr is very happy with the interest Napoli has in him, however nothing will happen in January. We will discuss the matter in the summer. He is happy to be wearing Empoli’s jersey.”

Apparently we will have to wait for the summer transfer window to get a clear glimpse of what Piotr Zielinski’s future looks like.  However for now,  we are treated with watching him assist fellow teammate Massimo Maccarone to a few more goals at least until the end of the season.

Roma Contact Genoa for Perotti

Roma might have recently said their goodbyes to Juan Iturbe but one of his Argentinian compatriots could be making his way to The Eternal City.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, it is no longer a secret that Roma are in talks with Genoa for Diego Perotti. The 27-year old former Sevilla winger would be a welcomed addition to Roma’s attack as the club focuses on both the Champions League and Serie A.

Roma have made an offer for Perotti but it was rejected by Genoa as it was deemed too low. They are asking for a much higher offer.

In the mean time, Di Marzio is also reporting that Sunderland’s Jeremain Lens is another option for the Romans however no contact has been initiated with the English club at the moment.

Palermo Tracking Panathinaikos Striker

Palermo are reportedly in the market for another striker after completing the signing of  Manuel Arteaga from the Swiss league yesterday.

Considered one of Greece’s top talents, Panathinaikos striker Nikos Karelis‘ 23 goals in 71 appearances have not gone unnoticed in Europe. According to Alfredo Pedulla, Palermo Sporting Director Manuel Gerolin recently confirmed the Sicilian club’s interests in Karelis:

“We are following him. We are interested in him but for now there is nothing else. We will see what happens at the end of the January mercato but I do not believe a deal will materialize seeing as Panathinaikos are asking for a lot of money.”

Karelis has appeared for Greece on the international stage at all levels, from U17 to the Senior squad. He is capped 7 times at the Senior level, scoring once.

Inler Turns Down Sampdoria

Following a series of discussions, Sampdoria will no longer be pursuing Gokhan Inler. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, the former Napoli midfielder has chosen a move to the Bundesliga with Schalke instead of an Italy return with the Blucerchiati.

Inler, who currently plays for Ranieri’s Leicester City, made the decision that was best for his career. Despite Sampdoria’s advances, the Swiss international sees Schalke as the ideal option for him. With this decision, Sampdoria can now turn their attention to other mercato targets.

The Swiss international has only made 5 appearances for Leicester City, three of which were in the Starting XI.

Napoli keen on landing Valencia midfielder Andre Gomes

The January transfer window hasn’t even started yet, and Napoli seem to be on top of their business already.  There have been numerous contacts in the past days between Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis and Andre Gomes’ agent Jorge Mendes.

The extremely talented central midfielder has caught the eyes of many top teams around Europe.  Barcelona being one of the many teams interested in the young Portuguese’s signature.  However, Napoli in the past few days have been making movements on Gomes.  With Corriere Dello Sport reporting that De Laurentiis has had a phone call with Gomes’ agent Jorge Mendes.  Napoli are supposedly very serious in gaining more information on the player and seeking a deal with Valencia.

Napoli were reportedly in the running for young PSG midfielder Adrien Rabiot.  Despite their interest, PSG turned down any possibility of a deal being met with the Partenopei.  Therefore, Napoli look to La Liga for their largely sought after midfielder they so desperately need.  Although Hamsik, Jorginho and Allan have been bossing the center of the park for most of the season so far, they still lack depth in the position despite having Valdifiori and Lopez to rely upon. The two have been lackluster to say the least so far this season, and the three starting midfielders need rest every once in a while, so the idea of Andre Gomes to Napoli is not a bad one.   It can greatly benefit the squad in their bid for a third scudetto crown.

Carpi Set Their Transfer Strategy

Second-to-last in Serie A on 10 points and 6 points away from safety, Carpi are not giving up on their dreams of top-flight survival just yet.

I Biancorossi are determined to improve their squad during the January mercato with Sporting Director, Giancarlo Romairone having drawn up a transfer strategy for the Serie A debutantes.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, one of the names at the top of their list is Bologna midfielder Marco Crimi. The former Latina player has only graced the field once for Donadoni’s squad and would surely get the necessary pitch time at Carpi. Another Bologna player sparking their interest is former Serie B capocannoniere Matteo Mancosu who has been unable to regain his scoring touch since joining the club from Trapani last season. Mancosu is identified as a possible replacement for Borriello should the current striker decide to search for greener pastures in January.

Fiorentina has opened discussions with Carpi regarding the availability of former Viola, Ryder Matos however Carpi are reported to be asking for a player in return for their Brazilian forward. Di Marzio reports that Carpi would request midfielder Leonard Capezzi, currently on loan at Crotone but the chances are close to impossible at the moment.

Finally, Cagliari’s 20-year old defender Antonio Barreca is in Carpi’s thoughts but it is a move that seems difficult to complete as Cagliari have no intention of selling him. The other idea is U-21 Italian international and Juventus-owned Alberto Cerri, who also plays for the Serie B table toppers. Cerri has one goal in 11 appearances for Cagliari this season.

With the mercato reopening in three days, Carpi are hoping their transfer strategy will be the starting point of a lengthy fight for Serie A safety.

“Ibra Is Selfish And Doesn’t Care About Younger Players”, Says Coman

The France international slams the Swedish superstar

Ex-Juve winger Kingsley Coman seems to have quite a temper, given he’s only 19. Coman, who’s currently enjoying a good form at Bayern Munich on a loan deal from the bianconeri, has spoken to German magazine Kicker about his struggles at his youth club PSG.

Most of these struggles were caused, according to him, by Zlatan Ibrahimovic nonetheless, a man “who only cares for himself”, he said.

“My relationship with him was completely insignificant”, he added, ” because he’s selfish and he’s only interested in himself. He’s not the kind of player who tries to give some advice to younger players, he just doesn’t care”. It was also because of this kind of frictions that he left PSG. “The dressing room in Paris was divided in many clans, it was very difficult to settle in. Besides, pressure is very high and it’s not easy to bear it if you’re young”.

Pereira On Track for Leicester Move

The Portuguese youngster continues his approach to the Premier League side.

As one new acquisition arrives for Sampdoria, another is soon to depart. Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Sampdoria and Leicester City are in advanced negotiations for 17-year old right-back Pedro Pereira to complete a move to the EPL club in January.

Pereira sale would be around €10 million and Sampdoria are expected to make a profitable return on the Portuguese youngster they originally signed for a mere €120K. He made 8 appearances for the Blucerchiati, starting 6 of those games.

Sampdoria are also in talks with Leicester to bring Tunisian center-back Yohan Benalouane back to Serie A. However, a deal for the former Saint-Etienne youth product will have to wait a few more days as Leicester are preparing for their upcoming game vs Manchester City. Benalouane had worn the jerseys of Cesena, Parma and Atalanta prior to being sold to Leicester City

Sportiello Signs Contract Renewal Until 2020

Atalanta have secured their goalkeeper position for the foreseeable future as Marco Sportiello has signed a renewal until 2020.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Marco Sportiello has signed a renewal with Atalanta that will tie him down to the club until 2020. The following is the club’s official press release following the renewal,:

Our club, a club that values players that come from the youth system, have decided to renew the contract of our young keeper, who grew up in our primavera and has spent the last three seasons with the first team. In the afternoon, Atalanta and Marco Sportiello have in fact reached an agreement for the extension of his contract until June 2020.”

Sportiello has established himself as a regular in Bergamo and has emerged as one of the finest young keepers in all of Italy. As a result, he’s attracted interest from abroad, most notably from Liverpool. His renewal, however, should close the door to a potential departure and stop clubs from making advances for him.

The 23-year-old made 37 appearances in the league last season and has already featured in 16 of Atalanta’s 17 Serie A games thus far.

Tavecchio Wants Conte to Stay

FIGC president Carlo Tavecchio would love for Antonio Conte to extend his contract with the Italian National Team.

According to Gianlucadimarzio.com, Tavecchio is sure that Conte will renew his contract which ends after the 2016 Euro in France. The FIGC president told reporters,:

” Conte is like a son to me, but if he decides to leave, as I always say, if a pope dies another one is appointed,” said Tavecchio.

Though Conte has been taking English classes this past year Tavecchio rules out any other rumours linking him to the Premier League and stated that,:

“Our coach is taking English for a year is not a bombshell, in today’s world it is a right to learn this language.”

With his future hanging in the balance, Conte will look to shut down all rumours around him as his azzurri find themselves in a difficult group with Belgium, Sweden and the Republic of Ireland.

Cellino Changes Mind Over TV Presence at the Stadium

Leeds United president Massimo Cellino, who banned all Sky cameras from covering today’s game, has now changed his mind.

Prior to tonight’s kickoff that saw Leeds take on Derby County in the Championship, Cellino banned all Sky cameras from going to the stadium as it discourages fans from attending the game. According to Gazzetta della Sport, Cellino has now changed his mind and has allowed Sky cameramen in at Elland Road.

Cellino’s main qualm with Sky is that they often chose to cover Leeds United games and broadcast them live on television which resulted in a decrease in attendance at the stadium. The English side have, however, protested this and will look to change it going forward. Moreover, the presence of Sky has also led to a change in time of most games due to television constraints which in turn have an adverse effect on both the players and the fans.

Tonight’s game marks the third time a Leeds United game is televised. As a result of their live broadcast, Sky will make approximately 100,000 to 120,000 pounds. While Cellino is no longer in Italy, his antics continue.
