They say good things come to those who wait, so if you are reading this column I’m afraid you’re just going to have to wait that bit longer then.
Yes, it may be a little later than normal but here is your week 19 round-up of the Serie B Season. As everyone else went into the weekend knowing that a nice little holiday was just around the corner the boys from Serie B knew one of the busiest periods of the season awaited them.
After the weekends action there is now a slightly different look to the league’s top three. With Novara leap frogging Bari into third spot after the Galletti lost 2-1 away to Cagliari. And it is at the Sant’Elia where we begin the action.
Cagliari and Bari took to the pitch in what was easily the biggest match of the weekend with a positive result for either side set to have a big impact on matters at the top of the table.
It was the Sardinians who took the lead on 22 minutes. A pile driver from well outside the area by Salamon was poorly dealt with by Guarna who was only able to knock it straight into the path of Melchiorri who gleefully accepted the gift to score.
It was 2-0 on 35 minutes, Melchiorri once again involved this time laying the ball out left to the onrushing Marco Sau who took a touch to get it out of his feet before curling it perfectly into the bottom right corner.
Bari though were not dead and buried yet and only two minutes later they halved the deficit. A free kick out wide on the right was swung in by Rosina. Managing to evade everyone in the box it nestled nicely into the bottom left corner of Storari’s goal.
The second half would present good chances for both sides but it would be the hosts who would pass up the best of the lot. A Di Cesare foul inside the box presented the Rossoblu with a chance from the spot. Sau however was unable to beat Guarna this time with the keeper getting down well to deny the effort.
It was not to matter overly though as Cagliari held onto win and now move within a point of Crotone at the top.
The reason for that being that the Squali were pegged back late on against Latina at the Stadio Francioni. Esposito gave the Leonialti the lead on the half hour mark. A corner from the right was not cleared by the Crotone defence and the ball fell to the Latina man who stabbed home from close range.
Ricci drew the away side back level seven minutes past the hour from the spot, after Olivera was given his marching orders for fouling his man in the box. Crotone then thought they had snatched the win six minutes from time when Ante Budimr headed home from basically on the goal line.
Latina however were not to be denied and in stoppage time at the end a free kick from the right was swung into the danger zone. From there it bobbled around for a moment or two before being lashed home by Acosty. 2-2 was how it finished.
Novara took advantage of Bari’s defeat to move into third. Thanks in general to their 3-1 away win against struggling Ascoli. Andrej Galabinov gave the Biancoazzurri the lead on five minutes after a mistake around the half way line was capitalised on with a quick counter the finished with the big Bulgarian putting the ball in the back of the net.
Just before the break it was two. Once again some truly awful play by Ascoli presented Novara with the chance. A switch of roles this time saw Galabinov lay the ball into the path of Gonzalez. Who despite still having a bit to do made it look simple by drilling home from the edge of the area.
On 65 minutes it was 2-1 Bellomo sending Da Costa the wrong way after Perez had been brought down. However, two minutes from time Viola made sure of the points with a beautiful mazy run and dink finish.
Livorno continue to implode, a situation that would be sad if not for the fact that we all want to find out home much gas is left in the implosion. They lost 4-1 on Friday evening at the Renato Curi against Perugia.
This all after Moscati had given them the lead with a fine strike from distance on 33 minutes. Not long after that though Gianluca Comi and manager Bortolo Mutti were both sent off and from there it was all the Grifone.
Drole drew them level on 56 minutes after a cross from the left kindly fell his way. On 71 minutes Ardemangi finally gave them the lead. A cross from the left again was headed back across the six-yard box to be tapped home by the striker.
Parigini made it three, three minutes later with a nice low drive into the bottom right corner after his initial header had been saved. Finally, in the 90th minute Ardemangi got his second and Perugia’s fourth with another simple tap in.
Elsewhere around the league there was massive wins for Cesena and Virtus Entella. The seahorses getting back to winning ways by slamming four past Ternana without reply. While Entella did a number on Vicenza. Caputo scoring twice in a 4-1 win.
Modena beat Salernitana 2-0 in what could be classified as a relegation six-pointer. Belingheri and Granoche with the goals for the Gialloblu.
Meanwhile Brescia and Spezia plus Trapani and Pro Vercelli both played out 0-0 draws. Pescara beat Virtus Lanciano 2-1 in Lanciano, a Memushaj penalty the difference. While finally Avellino condemned Como to another defeat.
