With the transfer window just around the corner, we look at what is in store for Massimiliano Allegri’s Juventus.
Going into the new season with as many as ten new players, Juventus were always going to have trouble adjusting. After getting one point out of a possible nine to start the season, the pressure to perform in Turin was at an all-time high and had many wondering whether Allegri’s side would be fighting for the Scudetto at the end of the season. Following their loss to Sassuolo, Juventus sat in fourteenth place on twelve points, eleven adrift from league leaders Roma. The Italian champions, however, made no excuses and went on to win their last seven games of 2015. Juventus now find themselves in fourth place just three points back of the lead. Going into the winter transfer window, Giuseppe Marotta will be looking for the right opportunity to bolster his side ahead of a crucial stretch that sees the Italian giants take on Bayern Munich in the round of sixteen of the Champions League as well as a number of direct Scudetto rivals.
Who’s In –
Over the last few years, Juventus’ philosophy in January has always been the same: Don’t make any splashes and only make a purchase if the opportunity is right. When the window reopens, one wouldn’t expect the bianconeri to make any significant acquisitions. At the moment, not much is being made about Juventus and the upcoming transfer window but Marotta is not one to turn down a good deal. Should an opportunity arise for Allegri’s side to sign a quality attacking midfielder like Riccardo Saponara, Juventus are unlikely to say no. That said, Empoli will be reluctant to let him go considering the season they’re having that has them pushing for European places. In addition, Juventus appear to be sticking with the 3-5-2 meaning their need for a trequartista is no longer a priority. Another player that may make the move to Turin is a fullback whose profile is similar to that of Sassuolo’s Sime Vrsaljko. With Martin Caceres reportedly on his way out, another defender and a vice-Lichtsteiner in particular may be sought after by Juventus.
Who’s Out –
On the opposite side of the transfer spectrum, Juventus will be busier. For one, many journalists including Giovanni Capuano, are of the belief that newly-acquired keeper, Norberto Neto will be on his way out. The Brazilian keeper has featured scarcely since making the move to Turin and is said to be looking for a starting role. Another player who may leaving for greener pastures is the previously mentioned Caceres. The Uruguayan defender has struggled with injuries in recent years and has been unable to find continuity at Juventus. Moreover, his antics that saw him get his license suspended are unlikely to have endeared further to the Juventus management. As a result, Caceres is the front-runner to be leaving the club. A third player that could be leaving Turin is Simone Zaza but it is rather improbable that Allegri would let the former Sassuolo man depart leaving him with only three strikers.
Final Word-
As the transfer window approaches, rumours surrounding Juventus’ supposed activity will only intensify. The reality, however, is that Allegri’s side will probably be the least busiest out of all Italy’s top clubs. As of right now, Juventus will be happy with their current squad and confident in their quality to progress in all competitions. It’s also important to note that signing world class players in January is never easy considering most worthy players are cup-tied or teams are reluctant to let their best players go half-way through the season. While January is set to be a hectic month full of transfer rumours, Juventus fans shouldn’t hold their breath waiting for that special player given their club’s past history and their current squad.
