It is not everyday that 3 of the finest soccer players of their generation descend upon an American city to embark on a journey and dream of growing the beautiful game; but that is exactly what is happening in Miami, Florida. It is an even grander sensation considering the fact that David Beckham, Paolo Maldini, and Alessandro Nesta’s playing days all crossed paths together as teammates at AC Milan of Italy’s Serie A.
Last week, David Beckham’s quest to bring a Major League Soccer team to South Florida took a major step forward. For the first time in over two years of speculation and negotiation, ever since exercising his contractual MLS expansion franchise rights, the acquisition of approx. 6 acres of privately-owned lands for a soccer-specific stadium in Miami’s financial district was officially announced. Hopeful of a 2018 entry into the league, the former Rossoneri playmaker and his ownership entourage still seek to attain an additional 3 acres of property in Miami-Dade County in order to construct an anticipated 25,000 seat-filled capacity venue, which will be one of the largest soccer facilities in America’s top-flight league.
Meanwhile, the inaugural campaign of NASL side Miami FC has is already underway for Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Nesta. With preseason exhibitions and trainings behind them, the Maldini co-owned and Nesta-coached squad’s season kicks off against Fort Lauderdale Strikers this Saturday. The prominent Italian defenders will be eager to start their new partnership together in football management. By bringing a piece of the AC Milan flag to the stars and stripes of American soccer, fans everywhere will continue to embrace the ambitious outreach of the world’s game.
