Frattino Says Italy lacks a superstar in attack

TMW’s Marco Frattino commented on Italy’s lack of striking power for Antonio Conte:

“Once upon a time, Italy had strikers with the names of Gigi Riva, Paolo Rossi, Roberto Baggio, Christian Vieri, Filippo Inzaghi and Luca Toni to name a few. Current Italy, however, does not have such names in attack. In Serie A, Eder is the top scorer. The Sampdoria striker has six league goals but to consider Eder a heavyweight Italian striker is just not right. The scoring charts during the Azzurri’s march to Euro 2016 tell the story. Conte picked several forwards, however, there were not many goals scored. Someone like Robert Lewandowski, who has 12 goals and leads the Euro 16 qualifying scoring charts, is someone the national team has been missing for some time. Antonio Candreva, Eder, Graziano Pelle and Giorgio Chiellini are the top scorers for Italy during these qualifiers with two goals each. Perhaps this is why Conte focuses so much on the ‘team’ aspect of the game seeming that Italy no longer has a formidable striker it can look up to. In France, with the shortage of a classic center forward, you can’t do much otherwise than play as a team.”
