Ex-Sampdoria forward Juan Antonio quits football for a rock band

The career of Juan Antonio, which many of you have never heard of but if you did you’d probably remember him from a Sampdoria game against Cagliari.

In an article by Gazzetta.it, the Italian newspaper chronicled the career and story of Juan Antonio.

At the Marassi, the head coach was Ciro Ferrara, who asked Antonio to come on in the dying minutes of a game they were losing 1-0 to.  Unfortunately, his impact was minimal and Sampdoria lost the encounter. Less than two months later Ferrara would be sacked, and Antonio would register one other Serie A appearance for the remainder of the season.

Those two games were the only two Juan Antonio would manage to accrue in his Serie A career.

The Argentina born forward was actually a promising prospect, during the early half of the 2000s, he made a few appearances for the Argentina U-17 team.

Antonio started his career for the illustrious side in Buenos Aires, River Plate. In 2010, he signed with Brescia but did not receive playing time because Alessandro Diamanti and Patagonis Kone were in front of him. He was eventually loaned to Ascoli, which he did score a vital goal which prevented the club from being relegated.

Eventually he returned to Brescia who fell to Serie B, scored 3 goals and was then sold to Sampdoria. From there he was sold to Varese then to Parma then loaned to FeralpiSalo where he eventually retired because Parma [his new parent club] went bankrupt. Confusing, right?

Today, he announced his retirement from football and said goodbye to Italy. Returning to his hometown of Trelew with his wife and son.

At 27 years of age, Juan Antonio is by no means near the age of retirement, so what is he deciding to turn to next? The music industry.

He’s returning to his old band, La Vieja Mimosa, The Old Mimosa. Where he will play the guitar like he did when he was a kid.

“They asked me to come back and play in Argentina – he said – but I said no. I want to play the guitar. I put my old guitar back in my hand and I will return to performing. That’s enough for me to be happy.”

Juan Antonio was one of the many casualties from Parma’s disaster, but at least he’s doing something he loves, just in a different career.
