Serie B week 6 round-up

Is there a more unpredictable league in the world than Serie B? I can’t believe there is one. We are now six weeks into the new season and even last place Novara would think that a play-off run is still a possibility.

Now that may be unlikely, but the fact that even a small run of good results would propel them right up the table showcases just how even the teams in this league are.

We start the weekends round up with probably one of the more unfashionable clubs in the division, Crotone. After match day six the Rossoblu sit joint top of the table with Cagliari on 13 points. It has been a terrific start to the season for Ivan Juric’s men, who many myself included expected to struggle this year.

They continue their impressive run at the Ezio Scida on Friday night where they took on Salernitana. While to an outsider looking in the score line may seem surprising, in truth it was kind to Salernitana as they were put to the sword by the hosts.

It only took 12 minutes for Crotone to opening the scoring, Stoian with a powerful run into the box before cutting back inside his man onto his right foot and bending it perfectly into the right hand side of the net.

Six minutes later it was two-nil, Stoian again playing a key role taking the ball on before delivering a perfect through ball into the feet of Ricci who then slid it under the body of the advancing keeper. It was a night when everything just came together for the Rossoblu as they kept the Granata to chances from distance whilst also looking dangerous every time they went forward.

Two minutes in the second half it was three. Ricci again, this time coming late into the box to meet a first time, a low cross placed just out past the penalty spot from the left, from there he brilliantly swept it into the top left corner.

Crotone weren’t done there though and with 18 minutes left Torromino scored from the spot to round off a fantastic four-nil win for the Rossoblu.

A team who picked up a fantastic win this weekend was Pasquale Marino’s Vicenza as they went to Avellino and crushed the Lupi.

Gatto opened the scoring from the penalty spot on 25 minutes smashing it into the bottom left. Avellino did get themselves back into the match soon afterwards when Marcello Trotta controlled a cross from the left before turning his man and drilling home.

Vicenza however were clearly the better side and they restored their lead on 34 minutes. Galano the beneficiary after his shot form the edge of the area was blocked, but fell back kindly into his path. Clean through he then finished with relative ease.

Then just on the stroke of half time it was three-one as the unfortunate Biraschi bundled the ball into his own net. The rout was completed early into the second half when Giacomelli expertly curled home a free from the left.

The draw sees Avellino drop into the bottom third heaping the pressure on a beleaguered Attilio Tesser.

Livorno’s great start to the season is in danger of coming undone as they lost their second match in a row, this time away to Cesena. The only goal of the game coming via Sensi’s penalty. In fairness it was the least Cesena deserved as they were in total control and should have won by much more.

Cagliari remain top, but only just as they lost one-nil away to Massimo Oddo’s Pescara. The Delfini were probably the better team throughout, but they had Di Gennaro to thank for helping them on the way.

The Cagliari man was sent off for two moments of pure stupidity in the space of ten seconds. This left the Rossoblu a man short for just under an hour. It the end it was just too long to hold out as Gianluca Lapadula scored seven minutes into the second half to hand the hosts the win.

Bari were back in the win column, but they had to do it the hard way as two late goals from Francesco Valiani and Massimo Donati overturned Scaglia’s fine opener to give the Galletti an important three points.

Ascoli were the third side of the week to find the net four times as they tore Como apart. Giorgi, Perez, Cacia and Jantko with the goals although they were helped in no small part to the pure absence of a Como defence throughout.

Elsewhere this weekend Ternana leapfrogged off the bottom of the table as goals from Falletti and Ceravolo gave them the win over Novara. Brescia and Modena played out an exciting two all draw at the Rigamonti. It was the first time this season that the Gialloblu scored more than once in a game. Brescia meanwhile also missed a penalty while the score was still nil-nil.

Virtus Entella beat nine man Pro Vercelli one nil, Masucci with the goal just before half time and finally Virtus lanciano and Spezia played out a nil all draw.

Another week of thrilling action is nearly done with only Trapani and Perugia to play on Monday night.
