Roma boss Rudi Garcia expressed his satisfaction at his side’s qualification to the round of sixteen despite putting forward a mediocre performance.
In his post-match press conference, the former Lille tactician said,:
“We know that the Curva Sud are not with us and the atmosphere is a different one at the stadium. The team didn’t everything to win the game but in the end we qualified and were stronger than the third and fourth place teams in the group. We could have done better but a team who takes 24 shots isn’t a team that played bad. Tonight, I had a small bench to work with especially when looking at our offensive options. Dzeko finished the game with cramps but I couldn’t substitute him. We achieved our objective of qualifying to the round of sixteen and in February, we will have reinforcements.”
Were you expecting more from your team?
“We wanted to win but we weren’t able to but we knew that a draw could have also been enough. The draw is as useful as bread.”
Why isn’t this Roma playing as good as the one from a few weeks ago?
“It’s not the same team, I have less options in attack. We’re at a point in the season where the same players keep playing. We dropped points against Bologna and Torino. When you are going through times like these, you need to get results. Even with six points, we finished second in the group and have three games remaining before the break. We have to recover quickly given that we play Napoli on Sunday. We wasted a bit too much energy tonight.”
When will the fans change their minds?
“It’s up to us to inspire them by demonstrating desire and whatever it takes to win. When you sweat for the shirt, no one can tell you anything. What’s worse is that the Curva Sud has been on strike since the beginning of the season. It was sad to hear the whistles tonight but it has to be up to us to change the situation.”
