Obscene chants broke out at the Stadio Olimpico during Roma’s Champions League match against BATE Borisov on Wednesday night. There was no surprise on who those chants were directed against…
Usually when a situation like this arises, it is better to turn the other cheek and not give attention to this incredible idiocy. In this case, there must be a reaction. On Wednesday night at the Stadio Olimpico, the Roma ultras created an extremely offensive spin-off of a chant Napoli fans usually perform during games at the Stadio San Paolo. This chant is called, “Un giorno all’improvviso”, or “One day suddenly”. It is a very light-hearted chant that Napoli fans use to express their love for the team and their gratitude towards their city. The chant’s translation is as follows,
“One day suddenly, I fell in love with you. My heart was beating, don’t ask me why. Of time that has passed, we are still here, and today, I defend the city.”
This is what the Roma fans perverted that jingle into;
“One day suddenly, Vesuvius will erupt, and fire will wash this city of (expletive). Cholera and Salmonella, but you are still here. What is the epidemic, that will annihilate you. Ale ale ale, Vesuvio ale ale.”
Despicable. Pitiful. Absolutely unnecessary. The list goes on and on of adjectives that can be used to describe what happened on Wednesday night. One thing is for sure, there will be more anti-Napoli chants a lot like this one in the future. This can only be stopped by the Italian FA, who have done a poor job to say the least, on the matter. A simple 20,000 euro fine will not stop this. There has to be something done as this reflects very negatively on the Serie A as a whole. Roma are not the only team that engage in these heinous acts, teams like Juventus, Torino, Atalanta, Empoli and many more, particularly northern clubs, have been caught directing racist chants towards Naples and its people.
Most of the time, these chants don’t even take place at a setting where Napoli is playing in. They take place when Napoli has absolutely nothing to do with the match itslef, like Wednesday night. What does Napoli have to do with a Champions League match they aren’t even apart of? It just goes to show how unnecessary and racist the chants truly are. The Italian FA must step in and create a permanent stop to this madness, as nothing else will change the situation. Hopefully, “one day suddenly”, all of Italy can be united in that these chants will no longer take place and a football match can go back to the way it should be, about the sport and nothing else.
