On Sunday, Italian Football Daily’s Alex Mascitti interviewed New York City FC attackers Khiry Shelton and Tony Taylor after the club’s 2-2 draw with Toronto FC. In an exclusive interview, he spoke to the two, asking how it is playing alongside the legendary midfielder Andrea Pirlo and for debut manager Patrick Vieira.
Q: As a winger, how is training and playing with Andrea Pirlo, or even Frank Lampard, helping you grow as a player?
Shelton: It’s fun. I make a lot of mistakes, but they correct me on them. It’s a learning experience and a process. I’ve learned a lot from Andrea and David [Villa] as well; it’s been great. What those players have done in their career. [laughs] It’s crazy just thinking about it. Being a young player just watching them growing up. It’s unreal.
Taylor: It’s been great. They are guys with tons of experience. They’ve played at the top levels, They give me pointers every day and I’m open to listening to them because they’ve played at the top levels. Me, I want to continue improving each day so it’s just an honor to be playing in the same team as them.
Patrick Vieira, who starred as a player for several elite clubs including Arsenal, Inter and Juventus at the club level, was appointed as manager of New York City FC last November. Shelton and Taylor explained how the 1998 World Cup winner is involved in their development as professional footballers.
Q: How is Patrick Vieira helping you on a daily basis, even as an inexperienced manager?
Shelton: He’s hard on me and demands a lot from me. That’s what I want as a player. I want my coach to be hard on me and push me because he sees things that I probably don’t see. I have to deal with that and learn as much as I can.
Taylor: With him, it’s great. He’s won everything [World Cup, Serie A and Premier League]. He has all that experience so I just want to absorb and learn everything I can. It’s great working with him; he gives me a lot of information and I just want to continue improving every day.
