Fabio Capello: ”The Azzurri? Never Say Never”

Fabio Capello is not ruling out taking over from Antonio Conte on the Azzurri bench after the EURO as his name has floated around as a potential successor.

With the latest news that Antonio Conte is close to announcing his departure from the Azzurri after the EURO for a the bench job at Chelsea, Fabio Capello was recently asked in an interview with Fox Sports about being a candidate for the role:

I am busy with TV but I never rule anything out because you never say never. For now, I am on vacation and I am doing well. I still have not thought about it. After leaving Russia, I had the intention of quitting football and becoming a sports commentator, which I enjoy a lot. When you make a mistake on the pitch, you have to deal with the critics and also the journalists. It takes interest and desire to consider it, at the moment I am relaxed, in stand-by. I have received many calls recently and I have said no to a lot of them. As I just said, I am on stand-by.

In the same interview, Fabio Capello was also asked his opinions on Mihajlovic and Milan, Francesco Totti and the Champions League encounter between Juventus & Bayern.

On Mihajlovic:

I have an admiration for him and for all he has done with the squad that he has at his disposal. It is the first time that Milan has made acquisitions of a certain level this year, but in the previous two years, they did not buy a single player worthy of Milan. Let’s give him time to build based on the work he’s done this year. If every year you change coaches, you are back at square one.

On Totti & Spalletti:

I am on both of their sides. One is a player who believes he can still give a lot and feels he deserves a contract for what he has done for the club therefore his request has to be taken with respect. I am also on Spalletti’s side because as a coach, he is choosing the best possible team because he wants to win. Obviously, he did not consider Totti ready for the type of football he wants to play at the moment, having seen him in training. I have to say thank you to Totti for what he has done for my Roma but at the same time, I am with Spalletti for doing a brave and right thing given the results of the squad.

On Bayern versus Juventus:

Juventus’ chances against Bayern? 40%. The Germans have great character and top-level players. We have to expect a more determined and stronger Juventus than what we saw in the second half of the first-leg, of which everyone spoke of in high regard. Juventus will have to do something exceptional to beat Bayern. I believe that Bayern are superior to Juventus.
