Both Andrea Pirlo and Daniele De Rossi are expected to be snubbed by Italy CT Antonio Conte for EURO 2016.
With 100 days remaining until the official kick-off of EURO 2016, where France will play their opening game against Romania, Corriere dello Sport are reporting that two World-Cup Winners and Azzurri veterans are to be left out of Italy’s squad for the summer tournament. Andrea Pirlo and Daniele De Rossi could be watching the EURO from the comfort of their own homes as Antonio Conte is set to overlook both players.
Corriere dello Sport also looked at the names, by position, that could feature in Conte’s 23-man squad:
Goalkeeper:
Gianluigi Buffon is a lock as the undisputed starter for the Azzurri but when it comes to the back-up role, Salvatore Sirigu is still viewed highly by Conte despite his lack of playing time between the posts at PSG. Genoa’s Mattia Perin will likely board the flight to France as the third goalkeeper, with Marco Sportiello preferred over Daniele Padelli as the reserve should any of the selected goalkeepers be ruled out by injury. Although he has become the revelation of the season for Milan, 17-year old Gianluigi Donnarumma is expected to focus on playing with the U-21s instead of earning a dream call-up by Conte.
Defense:
While it is unlikely that the Blocco Juve trio of Bonucci, Chiellini and Barzagli get unseated from their spots, Sassuolo’s Francesco Acerbi and Sampdoria’s Davide Astori are reportedly in the discussion for one of the two to make the squad in the central role. For the fullbacks, three Milan players are on Conte’s radar, those being Luca Antonelli, Mattia De Sciglio and Ignazio Abate.
Midfield:
The latest name to surface as a potential choice is Bologna’s Emanuele Giaccherini, who has refound his form as of late. He could find himself on the final list along with Milan’s Giacomo Bonaventura and possibly Riccardo Montolivo. However, Corriere dello Sport believes Stefano Sturaro could be a surprise addition.
Attack:
Pelle, Eder, Candreva and El Shaarawy are ahead of the pack and are almost locks to for selection, followed by Juve’s super-sub, Simone Zaza. The final spot could go to either Federico Benardeschi or Lorenzo Insigne instead of Berardi, Okaka, Immobile and Giovinco. The Italian outlet reports that Mario Balotelli has no chance of being selected by Antonio Conte.
The Azzurri will contest two major friendlies leading up the EURO. They will face Spain on March 24th and current World Champions, Germany, on March 29th.
