After carrying his Palermo side through the entire 2015-16 Serie A season, and helping the Sicilians avoid the drop to Serie B, Franco Vázquez delivered his farewell message to the faithful Rosaneri.
As the season began to wind down, it seemed all but certain that Palermo were to play their next football in Serie B for the 2016-17 campaign. However, 27-year old Franco Vázquez made sure that wasn’t going to happen as the Sicilian club managed to stay afloat relegation waters with a 16th place finish.
On the final match-day of the Serie A season, Palermo hosted 20th place Hellas Verona at the Stadio Renzo Barbera. Vázquez opened the scoreline in front of the home crowd, but the match remained tight until the very end. Despite conceding in the 84th minute, Palermo managed to hang on to defeat Verona 3-2, clinching top-flight Italian football for next season. Yet, while the entire club rejoiced and celebrated triumphantly that night, supporters knew that they were on the brink of waving goodbye to their star attacker.
Franco Vázquez had already decided that he was not going to renew with Palermo for next season. He is ready to write a new chapter in his career. This week, he delivered a heartwarming message to his club. Here is what he had to say, courtesy of Serie A TIM’s Facebook Page:
“For me it’s been a really good year because I feel like I grew in many respects. When things don’t go as you hope, it’s there where you have to show your strength, put your head down and work twice as hard. This weight helped me grow both on and off the pitch. The most beautiful thing was saying goodbye to Palermo in the best of ways, achieving what we promised. This makes me very happy, I’ll take it with me forever, wherever I go.”
Where will Franco Vázquez play football in 2016-17?
