On Friday, A.C. Milan goalkeeper Christian Abbiati announced that he will call it quits on his playing career after Saturday’s clash at the San Siro against Roma.
The official club statement, courtesy of acmilan.com:
“Christian Abbiati will call time on his playing career after tomorrow’s match with Roma at the San Siro. At the end of the game, the Italian goalkeeper will say farewell to the fans.”
The 38 year old has accomplished quite a bit during his long playing career. With the Rossoneri, Abbiati has won three Serie A titles (1998/99; 2003/04; 2010/11), one UEFA Champions League crown over Juventus (2002/03), one European Super Cup (2003), one Italian Cup (2003), and two Italian Super Cups (2004, 2011). According to Opta Paolo, the longtime Italian shotstopper has featured in 281 Serie A matches for Milan, more than any other Rossoneri keeper.
Saturday’s match at the San Siro is the club’s final match of the Serie A TIM season. Despite the importance of the match in earning qualification for the Europa League, La Gazzetta dello Sport insists that Abbiati will start over the gifted teenager Gianluigi Donnarumma who will be spared a breather in preparation for the club’s Coppa Italia final against Juventus on May 21st.
