Lazio and Fiorentina ended their respective Serie A campaigns this weekend with what can only be described as an extremely high scoring encounter. A victory for the Viola ensured Klose’s farewell was somewhat spoiled.
Lazio got under-way first with a beautiful volley from Senad Lulic as he gave them an early lead, but Fiorentina were having none of it as they attained control and scored three before half time via Matias Vecino, Federico Bernardeschi & Cristian Tello. Vecino managed to notch his brace which put the game out of Lazio’s reach, but veteran Miroslav Klose put away a penalty to ensure he at least got a farewell goal.
The hosts hit the attack early on, scoring from just the second corner of the game, Davide Astori’s headed clearance landing into the path of an oncoming Lulic, who controlled the ball on his chest and volleyed beyond Fiorentina goalkeeper Luca Lezzerini, who made his first Serie A debut.
Before long the visitors would begin to get into their groove and started to place more and more pressure onto the Lazio defence.
On the half hour mark Lazio could’ve had a second, when a cross from Lulic found Candreva but unfortunately for the Azzurri attacker his shot went just wide of the mark. From that point on it would be all Fiorentina; as shortly after Candreva’s miss, a thundering Vecino drive from the edge of area rocketed in for the equaliser.
As the game neared half-time it increasingly become more end to end as both sides had good chances, but it would be the Viola who would take the lead via Bernardeschi who was set up via a low Tello cross. Zarate missed a gilt-edge chance, but luckily for him Fiorentina made it 3-1 on the stoke of half time. This time it would be Tello who would slot it past Marchetti as Vecino would send him a lovely ball into the area.
The second half started much as the first half had ended, with the Viola continuing to mount pressure from the onset as Bernardeschi would hit the crossbar amongst other chances. Lazio weren’t without their opportunities to crawl their way back but unfortunately for them Vecino would bag his brace and secure the three points at the 70th minute mark.
Klose would get his final goal for Lazio as he would slot away a penalty on 74 minutes, which would also put him level with Goran Pandev’s goal total as the joint highest goalscoring foreigner for Lazio.
This positive result allows Fiorentina to finish the season in 5th place, just three points behind the surprise of the season Sassuolo, while Lazio finish eighth place and missing the opportunity to tie level with AC Milan on points.
