Marcello Lippi talks about the current Serie A campaign as it closed out its domestic season and claims Sassuolo have been the revelation of the year.
As a recent guest on Radio Onda Libera’s show Pezzi di 90, Marcello Lippi gave his thoughts on this past season in Serie A while also looking ahead to the EURO.
On if this Serie A campaign was better or worse than the last few years dominated by Juventus:
It was a great championship and I enjoyed this season. Overall, I saw a great display of football. Juventus gave an chance to everyone at the start and no one took advantage of it then they proved to be the strongest of them all. They lost only one game in the Champions League, against Sevilla, and it cost them. In the Coppa Italia Final, it will be good for Allegri to keep the level of concentration on high because a Final is never given and Milan, despite a difficult year, have a great tradition of success. Napoli and Fiorentina played great football for a large part of the season.
On which squad was the revelation of the season:
Sassuolo showed they have a great mentality and are a great organization. Empoli have also shown that it can play some great football.
On who would receive an ‘Oscar’ for their performance in Serie A:
I saw great things from Bernardeschi. Higuain was extraordinary because what he did was magical. His record of 36 goals holds immense value when compared to how difficult our league is.
On Italy at the EURO:
We always arrive in a good state when there is an event that counts. The injuries to Marchisio and Verratti were disappointing but Conte will bring out the best from the team. Italy knows how to deal with this type of competition. Let us not forget that if the Penalty Shootout went our way in Pasadena, we would have 5 World Cups and Brazil would have 4.
On who will be the team to beat at the EURO:
France because they are playing at home, are young, strong and are well coached. Then there is Spain and Germany.
On his future:
I would say I am done as a coach. For the rest, we will see what happens.
