The iconic shot-stopper was barely tested throughout the Sweden game and showered praise on his defense for their outstanding support.
Speaking to Sky following Italy’s second consecutive victory, Gianluigi Buffon praised his teammates for their performance:
I compliment the team and in particular, our defense. They are united, I will never stop thanking them. Today, they also helped me avoid many headaches. It was a difficult game but when you believe until the end, you can win games, even in an undeserved manner. Today, perhaps a tie would have been a fair result.
It is a great feeling to have made it to the knockout round, because we have not done so lately (laughs). We can now train calmly for the next ten days, we deserved this qualification. We must stay grounded, our humility allowed us to arrive here.
