Fiorentina and Azzurri youngster Federico Bernardeschi was delighted to receive a spot on the 23-man roster for Antonio Conte’s Italy squad traveling to France. He spoke about his role with the side.
Bernardeschi, courtesy of vivoazzurro.it:
“I’m the youngest in the group. I feel privileged and proud to be amongst all these champions. Being part of the Euro squad caps off a great year. I’m extremely proud and pleased. I think I’m one of the surprise selections but I’ve worked hard for this.”
The young Italian winger on his role within the side:
“I don’t have any problems adapting to different playing styles. I love to play wide on the right and I dream of playing in the number 10 role. I love playing the ball.”
Bernardeschi on the number 10 shirt being handed to Thiago Motta:
“I really agree with giving the number 10 shirt to Motta. He’s earned it with his career and his quality over the years.”
The Azzurri winger reflecting on his country’s World Cup 2006 victory:
“I remember the 2006 World Cup. I was supporting Italy in the square and for me they represented an entire nation.”
Bernardeschi on Conte’s tactics and demands:
“Conte asks us to pressure our man, to create an imbalance in numbers. He wants huge concentration when defending.”
Despite Italy being a bit of an underdog this time around, Bernardeschi remains upbeat, positive and determined to be more than an attendee at the Euro:
“I won’t be happy to just be here, we can all dream as a team and individually.”
