Paulo Sousa has indicated that he wants a new defender in his ranks for the 2016/17 season.
Fiorentina don’t just want Emanuele Giaccherini, but now they are evaluating defenders from abroad. The Viola suffered last season with a leaky defense and Sousa didn’t receive the reinforcements he pleaded for. As a result, Fiorentina slumped domestically and in Europe, and were perhaps quite fortunate to still qualify for the Europa League.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio, in the club’s sights is 24-year old Joel Veltman of Ajax. The Dutch player is a youth product of the Ajax academy and has become a staple in their club’s defensive armory.
The Amsterdam club’s first request was a modest €8 million, but that’s still too much according to the Italians. With it being so early in the window, Fiorentina would rather take their time and investigate other potential signings, but Veltman continues to be one of intrigue. It will be interesting to see whether or not Veltman ends up in Florence where Europa League football is to be had.
Last year, Veltman appeared in 44 matches for Ajax, scoring 2 goals in the process.
