Serie B Week 8 round-up

Had you told me before the season started that after eight matches a team in Red and Blue would be sitting top of the league, I wouldn’t have batted an eyelid. Naturally I would have believed this team to be Cagliari, however if you told me that instead the team would be called Crotone I would have laughed in your face.

Eight games in though and I’m rapidly back tracking on my pre-season predications as the men from the south have thus far taken the league by storm and sit in outright first spot one-point clear of the highly fancied Sardinians.

Before we get to Crotone however, we begin this week’s round-up with what was without a doubt the most exciting match of the weekend as Avellino went head to head with Brescia on Friday night.

It has been a far from ideal start to the campaign for Attilio Tesser’s Lupi side but things looked to be on the up here as they took the lead inside three minutes here. Arini the man to provide the finish as he slid in at the back post unmarked to stab home a cross from the right.

While going forward has not really been a problem for Avellino so far this year, it’s trying to keep them out that is their Achilles heel and they showcased their deficiencies again in that department five minutes from half time.

A cross from the right inexplicably managed to squeeze its way between two defenders before falling to the feet of Biancoazzurri ace goal threat Geijo who duly dispatched home. Now Lorenzo Insigne may be tearing up Serie A this season but his little brother Roberto is not doing too bad either and it was him who restored Avellino’s lead three minutes into the second half.

Managing to find the bottom right corner after mishitting a volley into the ground past an over committed keeper. Only six minutes later though Brescia were level a low cross from the right was cut back to just beyond the penalty spot where Kupisz met it first time on the hop sweeping it past the diving Frattali into the bottom corner.

Things then got worse for the hosts when they went three-two down four minutes later. Kupisz again with the finishing touch. This time the cross came from the left and Kupisz ghosted in at the back post to volley home.

Avellino though would at least earn a share of the spoils as on 64 minutes Bastien made it three-three and a fine goal it was. Not long off the bench Bastien gained control of the ball before charging at the Brescia defence sending them scattering, he then showed plenty of composure to find the back of the net and possible keep his manager in a job for a few more days at least.

Remember how good Livorno were over the first four weeks of the season, well to Amaranto fans that is just a distant memory as Christian Pannuci and his players continue their best sinking ship impression.

It is now four games without a win for the Tuscans (Three of those have been defeats), granted their latest setback came against the surprise package Crotone, but Livorno seem hell bent on alienating as much of their fan base as possible.

In the end it took 36 minutes for the Rossoblu to finally take the lead, some nice build up play was eventually rounded off at the back post by Balasa who side footed home in front of the Curva Sud.

We would have to wait till five minutes past the hour for Crotone’s second. A poor header back to the keeper was intercepted by Torromino who then lofted it over Pinsoglio who was caught in no man’s land. Six minutes from time Capezzi rounded off the win for the top of the table side.

Crotone march on, Livorno march aimlessly.

Crotone though may owe Novara a thank you card for it was there one-nil win over Cagliari that sees the Rossoblu sit top of the table. The only goal of this game came on 36 minutes, latching onto an inch perfect pass Gonzalez promptly stepped inside his man and placed the ball past Storari into the bottom left corner.

A defeat for Cagliari and one they can’t overly complain with, for Novara a morale boosting three points.

Bari (Exasperated Sigh) what in the world were you at this weekend, three-nil to Ternana, TO TERNANA.

All joking aside this is a very complexing and worrying result for Bari. A side who claim to have the ambition that Bari do just cannot be going to away to an average Ternana side and getting so convincingly beaten.

The goals coming from Belloni on 25 minutes, Avenatti on 33 and Falletti on 41. Falletti’s being the pick of the three as he smashed home on the spin. A great win for Ternana, Bari meanwhile remain fifth.

Elsewhere around the league this week Pro Vercelli got the new manager bounce as they overturned the previously unbeaten Vicenza two-one. They did have a stroke of luck however as Giacomelli’s early strike was ruled out. In the end Ettore Marchi put the Bianche Cascche in front before an Urso own goal doubled that lead. Raicevic pulled one back for the Lane but it was not enough.

Along with Vicenza the only other side heading into the weekend unbeaten was Trapani. Yet that run also came to a screeching halt as they were well beaten three-nil at home to Pescara. The goals coming from Lapadula, Benali and Caprari to give the Delfini all three points.

Meanwhile on Sunday night Perugia’s miserable start to the season continued as they went down two-one to Latina. Del Prete opened the scoring for the Grifone on 12 minutes benefiting from being in the right place at the right time to poke home.

The Leonialti however were back level eight minutes later, Ammari scoring from a corner from the right. Ten minutes later Acosty got what turned out to be the winner. Again it came from a corner, but this time from the left as Acosty rose highest to head home.

In the remaining matches Ascoli’s run of good form came to an end as they were beaten two-one away to Modena, two Mazzarani penalty’s enough for the Gialloblu. While the Virtus’s Entella and Lanciano both had one-nil wins over Salernitana and Como respectively.

Lastly Cesena beat ten men Spezia five-one on Monday night, a Garritano double plus strikes from Sensi, Djuric and Kone doing the damage.
