Italian Players in England: How did Darmian, Pelle et al fare this weekend?

In our weekly feature, here on Italian Football Daily, we take a look at the weekend performances of Italian players currently based in the top two divisions in England.

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE

Matteo Darmian (Manchester United)

Fresh from two good performances for the Azzurri over the international week, Darmian played the full 90 minutes in Manchester United’s visit to Everton. United out in a solid performance, helping United to keep a clean sheet as they ran out 3-0 winners over the Toffees.

Graziano Pelle (Southampton)

Pelle was unable to add to his tally of 7 Southampton goals this season in Southampton’s 2-2 draw at home to Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester City. The Azzurri striker did have a hand to play in the Saints’ second goal however, as his header from a James Ward-Prowse cross cannoned off the post back out to Virgil van Dijk, and the Dutch centre-half converted the rebound at the second attempt.

Fabio Borini & Vito Mannone (Sunderland)

In Sam Allardyce’s first game since replacing Dick Advocaat as Sunderland manager, Borini started for Sunderland for the fourth game in a row, as Sunderland travelled to West Bromwich Albion. Borini came close to equalising for the Black Cats in the 79th minute but was unable to convert the chance. Borini rounded off a frustrating afternoon by receiving a booking in the 84th minute, as West Brom held out for a 1-0 victory.

Mannone was an unused substitute in this fixture.

Angelo Ogbonna (West Ham United)

Following his recent recovery from a hamstring injury, Ogbonna was an unused substitute in West Ham’s 3-1 victory away at Crystal Palace.

Alessandro Diamanti (Watford)

Diamanti was not named in Watford’s match day squad as The Hornets crashed to a 3-0 defeat at home to Arsenal.

ENGLISH CHAMPIONSHIP

Federico Macheda (Cardiff City)

As has been the case for each league game this season, Macheda did not make Cardiff’s match day squad for the game against Preston North End. If the season progresses in a similar vein, one would expect the former Manchester United forward to look for a move in the January transfer window.

Diego Fabbrini (on loan from Watford) & Michael Agazzi (Middlesbrough)

Middlesbrough hosted Fulham, as they looked to maintain second place in the Championship. Fabbrini was unable to convert two excellent chances, and was replaced in the 80th minute as ‘Boro were held to a 0-0 draw.

Once again, Agazzi did not feature in Middlesbrough’s squad for this fixture.

Mirco Antenucci, Giuseppe Bellusci, Marco Silvestri & Tommaso Bianchi (Leeds United)

Leeds United played host to the Championship leaders, Brighton & Hove Albion, at Elland Road on Saturday. Leeds have failed to win any of their last 11 home games, and only Silvestri, of the Italian contingent started the game, with Antenucci and Bellusci on the substitutes’ bench.

Despite conceding two goals, Silvestri once again made some excellent saves, and was unfortunate to be on the losing side as he conceded an 89th minute winner. Antenucci was a 68th minute substitute as Leeds chased an unlikely win, but was unable to make any impact on the game.

Bellusci was once again an unused substitute, whilst Bianchi is still not yet deemed to have fully recovered from surgery on his knee back in July, and was not selected for the match day squad.

The result was sufficient to see Leeds part company with their manager, Uwe Rosler, on Monday morning.

Fernando Forestieri (Sheffield Wednesday)

After his influential role during Wednesday’s 3-1 victory over Preston North End before the international break, Forestieri showed excellent instinct, turning sharply, to score Wednesday’s only goal in their 1-1 draw at home to Hull City. His performances have seen him become a firm favourite with the Wednesday fans, and his link-up play with fellow centre-forward Lucas Joao deserved more reward.

Francesco Pisano (Bolton Wanderers)

Pisano did not make the match day squad for Bolton Wanderers’ 2-0 defeat away to Burnley.

Gabriele Angella (Queens Park Rangers – on loan from Watford)

QPR travelled to Birmingham City looking to reverse their poor run of results. Gabrielle Angella has received criticism for his recent performances and he was left on the substitutes’ bench by Rangers’ manager Chris Ramsey. Despite his absence, QPR still looked shaky in defence as they went down 2-1 to a Birmingham side pushing for promotion.

Diego De Girolamo (Sheffield United)

Once again, De Girolamo did not feature in Sheffield United’s match day squad for their visit to Oldham Athletic. It would not be surprising if, like last season, De Girolamo were to shortly go out on loan to a League 2 club to gain some playing time.
