Napoli played host to Fiorentina at a full Stadio San Paolo on Sunday afternoon.
The Partenopei won the match 2-1 with goals from the main duo Lorenzo Insigne and Gonzalo Higuain. This game was really a tale of two halves for Napoli. In the first half, Napoli came out a bit sluggish and under-the-weather. A dangerous way to play against a great Fiorentina side.
The first half seemed to play out as if Fiorentina would walk away with a result from the San Paolo, with Napoli’s midfield not being able to create many chances at all for Napoli’s attacking trio of Insigne, Higuain and Callejon. Fiorentina had a multitude of chances including a dangerous chance which featured a driven shot from Fiorentina’s Kalinic however, it was well saved from Pepe Reina.
Then the second half came…
Napoli came out with a purpose in the second half. Whether it was because of the 50,000 fans that inspired the players or Sarri’s halftime talk, it is impossible to know where Napoli came up with all the resilience they showed in the second half. Straight off the bat, Hamsik played a perfect through pass to Insigne which the Neapolitan striker tucked away in the first minute of the half. However, a formidble Fiorentina side clawed their way back with a great finish from Nikola Kalinic. Then, Napoli’s aggresiveness they’ve shown under Sarri settled in. Higuain robbed Ilicic of the ball in the midfield and received a through ball from Mertens to give the on-form striker his 6th goal of the campaign.
There it finished, a victory gifted to every Napoli supporter in the world. Napoli continue to fire away under the well-polished Maurizio Sarri, and do not look like stopping. Wins against Fiorentina, Lazio, Juventus and AC Milan all in the span of a month have many people with the thought of the Scudetto in mind. However, it is way too early to tell. There are so many teams that can snatch the title away from struggling Juventus this year. Napoli fans can only hope…
