Chiellini was quizzed on Italy’s defensive capabilities.
Interviewed by UEFA, Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini discussed his side’s defensive capabilities and what it’s like being a role model to younger players on the team.
“We hope our defense can provide to the team a sensation of security, we want our teammates to play with the knowledge that they have a solid wall at their backs.
“Certainly it’s an important aspect and we hope to give a great contribution to the squad for the whole tournament.
“Then, with our experience, we have to help the players who are in either their first or second tournament with the National team, helping them in this time is so important for their carriers.
“We’ve played different games in qualification, but the finals are a different thing. From June 13th onward each game will be fundamental, everybody will play with the maximum intensity and we can’t allow anybody to come onto the pitch fearful.
“For us, it’s double the work, we have to play well on the pitch and at the same time help out the less experienced players. From a different voice however, we’re receiving that typical enthusiasm from the youngsters, that cockiness that maybe we are missing having already played many tournaments like this.
“Is the defense better at 3 or for in the back? For me I wouldn’t change anything. I believe that the formations are selected according to the available players and not vice versa.
“But with great respect for everybody else, it would be a mistake not to play me, Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli if we are all at our best physical condition.
“We’ve demonstrated to be able to play also at four if need be, with myself or with Barzagli can play wider than usual.
“The important thing is that there’s a balance for every sector of the field. The rest of us cannot do much alone.
“Are we the strongest defense in the world? I’m not the one to say. There are different styles of defending. Some prefer defenders that play better on the ball, while others like more aggressive. Certainly we know we have an excellent defense that can do great things. The best however are the ones that win in the end.”
