The Little Pharaoh’s French Riviera Venture So Far

This past summer saw one of Milan’s fan favorites, El Shaarawy leave the club he idolized as a kid, in order to reignite his career at one of France’s biggest clubs, AS Monaco.

Milan underwent several changes during the offseason, with the arrival of a new coach and high profile signings. These changes resulted in a new atmosphere surrounding the club, with the club aiming to achieve better results and put many of the club’s recent struggles behind them. These changes also left many players on the roster outside of the clubs’ plans. One of these players was El Sharraway, although he still possessed great potential and was a fan favorite of the club. Neither the club nor the coach saw him having a place on the squad and once an opportunity for him to leave came, the player made the decision to leave.

Like his former club, El Shaarawy’s new club, AS Monaco was also undergoing several changes to both the club’s philosophy and its roster. Monaco has long ago moved on from its days as a big money spender, bringing in high profile players like James Rodriquez and Falcao. Monaco has slowly developed into a selling club, showing the ability to develop young players such as Anthony Martial and Yannick Ferreira Carrasco, then sell them at very high prices. El Sharaawy was one of several player brought in to replace several departures and quickly became the face of a new ambitious AS Monaco side.

El Sharaaway would eventually make his debut on the 28th of July against BSC Young Boys in a champion’s league third qualifying round. During the second leg, El Sharaaway would score his first goal for the club. Monaco would eventually fail to qualify for the Champions League after losing to Valencia during the play-off round with 3-4 aggregate. Since his debut for Monaco, El Sharaaway has made a total of 12 appearances and scoring a total of 2 goals in all competitions. With Monaco undergoing significant changes and losing several key players as well as adjusting to a new league, El Sharaaway has failed to establish himself in Monaco’s starting lineup. Although El Sharaaway has mainly only appeared as a substitute, 8 total in all competitions, he has shown to have an impact in the team. Often changing the pace of team and providing several goal scoring opportunities and most recently, El Sharraway scored a late equalizer for Monaco during a group stage match against an inform Tottenham Hotspur side.

El Sharaaway’s performances for Monaco have also caught the attention of Italy manager, Antonio Conte. With El Sharaaway being called up for Italy’s past two European qualifiers and starting against Bulgaria, which Italy would win with a score of 1-0. El Sharaaway would have a significant impact during that match, by creating several chances for the azzurri as well as helping to dictate the pace of the game and providing the energy that the Azzurri lacked in prior matches.

El Sharaaway has also recently shown the ability to remain fit, with injuries being a huge problem that has haunted him throughout his young career. Although El Sharaaway has not yet established himself at his new club, Monaco seems to be the right place where the little pharaoh could reignite his career and once again establish himself as one of football’s rising star.
